Monday: light wind and good fishing!

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Models predict a fair bit of back-and-forth in the wind this week as low pressure systems alternate with offshore high pressure. Out of the next three days, two are going to be based on gut instinct rather than model output.

For Monday, a broad area of low pressure encompasses the entire Northwest, which means we’re hoping for thermal support this afternoon. Guess what? We’ll get it. Early gradients were .04 and .03. We’ll see 7-10 most places this morning with 10-15 near Viento. While models predict a switch to light easterlies later today, I think we’ll actually see westerlies at 12-15 from Stevenson to Moiser. But then again, I could be totally wrong and the wind could shut down totally! River flow is 81,600cfs and temp is 70 degrees.

Tuesday sees low pressure move inland over Washington. Offshore pressure rises following the low’s departure, setting up bigger gradient. Early wind will be 12-15 from Viento to Swell. The wind will build to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles by late morning with 10-13 near Rufus. Portland will likely clear in the afternoon, resulting in a drop to 16-19 near Swell with other areas holding at 21-24.

High pressure builds inland on Wednesday, and a weak low approaches our region. Models start the day with light westerlies and switch to light easterlies. That might happen, but I think it’s more likely we’ll end up with 12-15 out of the west from Stevenson to Hood River. Unstable air moves in Wednesday night into Thursday. Westerlies return, but they will be quite gusty and unreliable. Models disagree on next weekend for now, so the extended forecast is off the table.

Road and Mountain Biking

Approximately 0.2” of rain fell last Thursday, meaning some of our trails have been refreshed. Next chance of rain: Thursday again. Chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest. Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). As for Kreps/SDS lands… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
