Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Our west wind streak continues through this week with the possible exception of Wednesday. Tuesday will probably be the strongest day of the bunch. Looking at next weekend (already?) we see much cooler weather. Ensembles are more optimistic about Friday and Saturday than they are about Sunday. Fathers: use that as leverage if you want!
Today, Monday, starts with pressures of 30.15/30.06/30.00 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.06. Strong west wind today will be in the morning; a building ridge will warm the air on the west side and knock down cross-Cascade gradients this afternoon. Jump on it early for 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 12-15 at Stevenson and 10-13 everywhere to the east. By late morning, the wind falls to 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier (and holds) and starts to fill in to Doug’s. At this time, the Hatch dips to 14-17 and stays there. The Lyle-Doug’s stretch is likely to pick up to 20-23 this afternoon, and Avery joins at 17-20. For the executive session, after 5pm, Rufus rises to 13-16. River flow over the last 24 hours was 182-253kcfs (201-253 at Rufus), river temp is 60.26F, and high temp forecast is 82F.
A low moves into BC on Tuesday in search of Cheezies, and a cold front swings through the Gorge. Timing of that front looks like late morning or early afternoon. Why do we need this information? Prior to it moving through, you’ll find the strongest wind west of The Dalles. After its passage: east of Lyle, or perhaps east of The Dalles. Tuesday starts with 19-22 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 to the east. We then see a brief period (8am-11am or so) of 22-25 from Stevenson to Mosier with building westerlies to the east. The focus then shifts east. A brief period of 30-35 is possible from Mosier to Doug’s prior to the wind settling in at 29-33 from Lyle to Boardman. Models knock down the wind speed between Stevenson and Mosier for a period late morning, but they bring it back to gusty 22-25 late afternoon. In brief, the focus will be east of Mosier, but there will be periods (early and late) when the west side will also perform. High temp: 75F for Hood River and 89F for Pasco.
Wednesday sees ridging build in. After a 10mph start from Stevenson to Hood River, the wind turns calm or nearly so. Evening wind, if we get lucky, rises to 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River. High temp: 75F for Hood River.
Extended: Thursday starts with easterlies and turns west late in the day. Friday brings a front through. This focuses the wind out east and gives us mid to upper 20s. Saturday: probably windy. Sunday: less chance, but all hope is not lost yet. Have a great day on the river today!

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. On June 25th, Brave Endeavors hosts a pride MTB ride at Post Canyon at 5:30pm. June 30th is Vortex #3, a paddling race. There will be a DW SUP foil race Sunday morning from Viento. Start time is 10:30am. There are also various pride events going on this weekend.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon.
Cycling
Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Eightmile, Knebal, Bottle Prairie, Surveyor’s, Dog River, Sueprconnector, and Cook Meadows are open. Fifteenmile is clear of snow but has not been cleared of downed trees. Lewis River is open. Lower Falls Creek is open, but the area above Horse Camp is not. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral.
