Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Monday morning, and the only resort open today is Timberline. Meadows is allowing hiking this week, and that should make for some very fun spring skiing midweek as valley temps approach 80. In the meantime, expect a cloudy day today with sprinkles after 11am. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 8000′ in the afternoon, and somewhere between 5000′ and 10,000′ after the sky clears tomorrow morning. Stable atmospheric profile, yo… Anyway, ,expect 1/5” rain between 11am and 5pm. That’ll be followed by another 1/5” rain between 5pm today and 5am tomorrow. Wind will be W 20-25 all day.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued

Tuesday looks partly cloudy or clear to start with clouds moving in midday. Light rain or sprinkles start up after 5pm. The snow level, as mentioned previously, could be anywhere between 5000′ and 10,000′ early. It will rise to 12,000′ or so in the evening. We’ll see about 1/10” rain overnight. Wind will be W 20-25 early, fading to W 10 after midnight.

Wednesday looks sprinkles and cloudy early and mostly clear by afternoon. There is a slight chance of mountain thunderstorms and convective clouds in the afternoon, so it’s possible some rain will develop. It’s also possible it won’t! The snow level will be 12,000′ all day. Wind will be W 10 in the morning, SW 10 in the afternoon, and S 10 after midnight. Thursday currently looks warm and sunny early with thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday was a very nice day at Arlington, and I’m happy to report that the new launch is much, much nicer than the old launch! It is also much, much more crowded than the old launch! Anyway, on to today, we’ll have very light west wind early. After 11, the wind will pick up to gusty 13-16 through the whole Gorge, and then climb further to gusty 20-24 east of The Dalles. Today’s wind will be driven by a weak weather system. Atmospheric dynamics will contribute to gustiness.

Tuesday starts with light westerlies. As another weather system (a warm front, to be exact) approaches the area, the wind will pick up. Expect W 5-10 by 11am. After 1pm, the wind will pick up to gusty 13-16 through the entire Gorge. Looking at Wednesday, everyone but wind sports people will be happy: nearly calm wind all day long!

Long-range models, notoriously unreliable for forecasting wind, are suggesting very strong wind Friday through Sunday. I definitely have my eyes on Friday at this point, because it looks like a stable setup with very strong high pressure off the coast. Let’s all cross our fingers that this pans out!

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m thinking this morning about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs in terms of me actually writing this section of the report. I’m sitting here noticing that I have a lot to do today: interview someone for a class project at 9, write that up, meeting with a prof at 3:15, class from 4-9:30, and somewhere in there I’d like to find time for a short workout and also to eat! With all of that humming in the background of my mind, there’s an almost-unconscious low-grade anxiety sitting here with me.

When we find ourselves very busy, tracking many things, hoping to find the time to finish them all, it’s hard to focus on higher-level needs. In other words, we devote our mental energy to survival, the survival of others, and then to other things in the order that they provoke our anxiety.

When we are busy, in other words, we have very little energy to devote to personal growth and relaxation and self-care. When there isn’t space in our lives for down-time and growth, we are less well-equipped to handle our more basic needs. And we can enter into a feedback loop where we become more and more stressed. So, here’s the point: if you find your life is continuously too busy for you to do the things you love, take a look at what all is going on to fill your time. If you can’t carve out time for things that nourish you, you’re likely to find yourself feeling worse and worse. You’re important too, you know! Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

We have high overcast sky this morning, and that won’t change for about 48 hours. Meh. At least it’ll be pretty warm! Expect sprinkles after 11am today, continuing through tonight. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 19% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks mostly cloudy most of the day and sprinkly before 10am and after 5pm. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. 68% chance of rainbows. Wednesday may start off with sprinkles but should turn clear midday with convective clouds in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and right around 80 in the afternoon. Yup, 80. Light wind. No rainbows. We’ll see a very muggy day on Thursday with a high temp in the low 80’s and a significant chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.
