Monday. It’s lookin’ like a windy week in the Ditch!

It’s looking like a windy week in the Gorge, despite the light wind start we’re seeing today. The low pressure system that’s been causing the cloudy, gusty conditions over the last few days will move east tonight, setting us up with a much better synoptic scale system: high pressure off the coast and low pressure…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

The low pressure system that’s been causing the cloudy, gusty conditions over the last few days will move east tonight, setting us up with a much better synoptic scale system: high pressure off the coast and low pressure inland. Models are predicting solid westerlies through Thursday. After that, they’re in disagreement due to, well, stuff getting absorbed into the jet stream. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

So, expect the wind to pick up today as this trough of low pressure moves east. The 7am gradients were .07 (pdx-dls), .02 (dls-psc) and .24 (eph-dls). That’ll be enough for 8-11 from Viento to Arlington this morning. The wind will slowly pick up to 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles by noon. After 2pm, we’ll see gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles (likely dropping to 14-17 near Hood River) with 15-18 from Maryhill to Arlington.

A weak weather system moves through tomorrow morning, and that’ll be the end of the dynamics for a few days. Expect gusty 13-16 through much of the Gorge early, picking up to 24-27 in the afternoon from Viento to Doug’s. The eastern Gorge will see 15-18 tomorrow.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m reading this really awesome book right now titled “The Body Keeps the Score.” It’s about trauma and the healing of trauma. Being human, I’ve experienced trauma, so this book has reminded me of things and left me in a bit of an anxious state. Or rather, it’s left my body in an anxious state, and its left my mind a bit bemused and fascinated.

We sit here, all of us, on July 13th, 2015, being affected by all the previous days of our lives. Things kick our unconscious self back into the past: we read a sentence, catch the scent of sagebrush, feel the breeze caress our skin in a certain way, notice someone’s mannerisms, or hear a song or a loud sound, and suddenly we’re anxious or sad or happy or at peace without knowing why.

The trick becomes noticing these triggers and creating a little distance so that we’re aware of what’s happening rather than absorbed by it. Think of it as the difference between watching someone go over the falls on a wave and going over the falls yourself. You can have empathy for the unlucky soul who just got pounded by a wave, but you have enough distance to craft a plan to rescue her should she need assistance.

You can do the same for yourself – know the source, watch your reaction, and craft a rescue plan. It ain’t easy, but it’ll make your life a whole lot better. And… when you have that distance and can watch what’s really going on, you’ll never be bored. So there. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy out there this morning and shall remain so today as a trough of low pressure slithers eastward late in the day. Expect temps in the mid 60’s early and low 80’s this afternoon. Light wind early, moderate wind late. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks partly cloudy, but less so than today. Let’s call it mostly sunny. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, strong wind late, no rainbows. Wednesday looks a bit cooler to start with temps in the mid 50’s, but don’t you worry: It’ll be in the low 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s still dry and dusty out there on the trails, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have fun if you go mountain biking. You will have fun. You’ll just be dusty! Out on the roads, this morning looks like your best pick for a while, with cool weather and light wind. Get some!
