Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Plenty more snow is in the forecast today for Mt. Hood. After this, we go into a period of lighter snow, and then a week or so of very cold weather. If you’re seeking extra-deep conditions, today is your day!
Regarding snow quality this morning, I received a text: “it’s medium dense. Walking through it up to one’s waist isn’t too bad.” Relatively light wind last night means the snow will be distributed evenly across all the open terrain. Go if you can! Heavy snowfall continues all day. Temps will warm in the afternoon and evening, and we’ll likely see a wee bit of drizzle or ice in the afternoon before the weather turns dry tonight. About 1.4” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, for 12-15” new snow. Another 0.2” is forecast early evening. That may fall as rain or ice. The snow level will be 500′ this morning (850mb temp 0C), 6000′ this afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. Wind: SW 10-20 during the day, 15-25 in the evening, and 5-10 overnight.
Tuesday starts clear. Light snow or perhaps mixed precip moves in overnight. The snow level will be 7000′ in the morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. About 0.3” WE is forecast. That will probably fall as dense snow for 1-3”. Wind: SW 5-15 all day rising to SW 15-25 in the evening and W 50 overnight.
Wednesday will be snowy with a strong orographic component for the first half of the morning. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 3500′ from sunrise on, 2500′ in the evening, and 1000′ after midnight. About 0.4” WE is forecast during the day, but that could rise thanks to orographic aid. Call it 4-6” average quality snow. Another 0.8” WE of fluffy snow falls overnight for 8-10” new. Wind: W 50 prior to dawn, WSW 35-45 early morning, SW 25-50 much of the day, and WSW 35 overnight.
Colder weather is forecast on Thursday with the snow level down around 1000′. About a foot of snow is currently forecast for that 24 hour period. Looking deeper into the forecast, we see temps (and snowfall) plummet over the weekend with all of the Northwest falling into a deep freeze. Have a great week!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Easterlies are forecast all day today and Tuesday. Monday brings E 35-40 at Rooster, 30-35 at Stevenson, 15-20+ at Viento, and 5-10 to the east. River flow is 185kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 34F. Tuesday starts with 40-50 at rooster, 30-35 at Stevenson, and 10-15 east of Viento. The wind drops about 10mph everywhere in the afternoon. High temp: 32F. Wednesday starts with E 10-15 at Stevenson and W 10-15 at Rooster. The central Gorge stays calm all day, Stevenson falls to light easterly, and the far eastern Gorge picks up to W 10-15. High temp: 39F.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Wet snow or plain old rain falls until 7pm. Overnight, the weather turns dry. Temps will be in the mid 30’s all day. Easterlies. 1% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be dry all day. Overnight is right on the edge for rain or ice. Temps will be right around freezing all day. Easterlies. No rainbows. Wednesday starts with ice or rain and switches to rain around sunrise. Sun breaks are possible midday, and then heavy rain returns. Temps will be upper 20’s early and upper 30’s later. Light and variable wind. 63% chance of rainbows.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
