Monday. It’s a disastrous winter wonderland out there!

DSC_4592
Well… Yesterday I said there was a chance of some mixed precipitation on Mt. Hood overnight, and that’s just what’s happening this morning. It’s been freezing mist for the last couple of hours at the ski resorts. The snow level today will be 5500′ for much of the day, dropping to 4000′ tonight and rising back to 5500′ tomorrow morning. We’ll see clouds and spotty light mist during the day, followed by .1” water value (WV) tonight, which may actually fall as an inch of new snow, but may also be mixed with something other than snow. Wind today will be SW 15 early, fading to SSW 10 in the afternoon and picking up to SSW 15 overnight. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off cloudy with light mist or mixed precip, followed by snow after 10am. The snow level will be around 5500′ tomorrow morning, dropping to 5000′ by 10am and 3000′ overnight. The snowfall during the day will be light, just .1-.2” WV, for 1-2” of new snow. Wind tomorrow will be SW 20 all day long.

Wednesday, in a big shift from yesterday’s model runs, looks dry and partly cloudy. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and at the surface overnight. Wind will be SW 15-20 early and light and variable in the afternoon. Thursday looks partly cloudy or sunny on the mountain with the free air freezing level at the surface. Expect light and variable wind on Thursday.

Looking ahead to next weekend, the GFS says we’ll get hammered with precip, and the Euro says we’ll stay dry. In other words, there’s no way to predict what will happen, so stay tuned!

It’s Temira’s birthday week. Send her a card!

Do you have a few extra moments? Please take the time to send me birthday greetings letting me know how I and this forecast impact your world in a positive way. That kind of feedback in tangible, greeting card form, keeps me going. My address: Temira. PO Box 841. Hood River, Oregon. 97031. Thank you so much for taking the time. Have a wonderful 2016!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s hard to tell what the wind is actually doing in the Gorge right now because many of the sensors in the western Gorge are frozen due to last night’s freezing rain. That said, as of 6:13am, there was an E .20 gradient. That’s enough for 25-30 at Steven’s Locks and 40-50 at Rooster. Tomorrow looks like 40-50 at Rooster early, dropping to 30-35 in the afternoon. Wednesday looks like E 25-35 at Rooster all day. Thrusday looks like E 20-25, backing off to 15-20 in the afternoon. As a matter of fact, there’s no end in sight to the east wind.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m having trouble coming up with something to say this morning, and I think that’s because my mind is trying to wrap itself around a decision: should I go to school in Portland tonight or not? This one choice is dominating my entire existence right now. Perhaps that’s because a lot comes into play: I want to see my friends, I love learning, I have (well, had – I canceled it) an important meeting this morning, I’m afraid of the icy roads and the other drivers and the 2 hour commute each way…

It’s funny how one small decision can have such a huge impact on our lives. We get all caught up in trying to figure out the “right” choice, and that leaves us evaluating and reevaluating our options. It’s almost as if some part of us thinks the world will end if we choose … poorly.

Even the biggest decisions are just decisions. Life will go on, no matter what we choose. We’ll find ways to cope, no matter what choice we make. It may feel like everything will change, but the essence of who we are will stay the same. It’s hard to keep this in perspective when the decision-making inputs are complicated. So all I can say is “try”to keep this in mind. In decision-making, there is a “try”, young Skywalker. Do make a decision, and try and keep some perspective about it.

That said, I think I’ve decided it’s not a great idea to try and go to school today, especially given the weather tonight. Be safe on the roads. Be kind to yourself when making decisions. Have an awesome day.

P.S. PSU decided to close for the day right after I wrote this. See… all that stress for nothing.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I stepped outside to take a look at the sky this morning, and for the first time in days, I saw a few stars. Oh sweet and beautiful stars. Welcome back! Today’s sky will be partly to mostly cloudy. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and the mid to upper 20’s in the afternoon. The western Gorge may see some light and spotty freezing mist/rain through about 11am. The rest of the Gorge should be dry. Around 7pm, another round of precip will impact the Gorge. This, most likely, will fall as freezing rain at all Gorge elevations. It’s just a tenth of an inch or so, but it’s enough to re-ice the roads. East wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow starts off cloudy with temps in the mid to upper 20’s. The sounding model insists we’ll climb above freezing, but I think we won’t. Call it upper 20’s to low 30’s in the afternoon. We’ll see light, on-and-off, freezing rain between 2am and 7pm, for .2-.4” accumulation, probably the lesser end from HR eastward. East wind. No rainbows.

Wednesday’s forecast has changed quite a bit from last night’s model runs, and that’s a good thing! As of this morning, it looks like we’ll be dry and cloudy Wednesday morning with sunbreaks possible in the afternoon, as the predicted precip stays well to the west of us. Hip-hip-hooray! Temps Wednesday will be in the upper 20’s early and, if the models are correct, in the mid 30’s in the afternoon. Maybe. Maybe. Thursday also looks dry.

Now, let’s look at the weekend: The GFS model has us buried in wintry precipitation, mostly snow. The Euro keeps us completely dry. In other words, there’s no way to know what will happen this weekend!

Road and Mountain Biking

I think it’s a little icy and snowy out there this morning. Even Marcroft is going to have to ride his trainer today! I’m sure that Jeri would love to see you at the Power Station for a few hours on the spin bike today… People, if you want to ride in this weather, consider picking up some BarMitts to keep your hands warm.

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday. There’s Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. Coming up this evening (be careful on the roads), there’s community yoga at 6:30pm at Yoga Samadhi, there’s Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center, and there’s Aikido at Trinity Natural Medicine. Coming up tomorrow, there’s pickup touch rugby at the ballfields next to Jackson Park at 5pm, there’s Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30pm, there’s yoga, sans monks, at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30pm, and there’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu from 5pm-9pm.

Have an awesome day today!
