Monday. How about some more snow for the lowlands?

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a warm and overcast day on Mt. Hood, and nothing really is going to change about that until tonight, when the temps will drop. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, and at the surface (in the Gorge, anyway) after midnight. Wind will be W 10 in the morning, rising slowly to W 30 by midnight. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tuesday starts off with some light, short-lived snowfall. The snow level will be less than 500′ (in the Gorge, anyway) all day long, dropping to sea level after midnight. Between 4am and 10am on Tuesday, we’ll see about an inch of new snow, and that’s it for snowfall for that period. Wind on Tuesday will be W 20 in the morning, tunring to WNW 10 in the afternoon, and light E (depending on the depth of the cold pool) overnight.

Wednesday starts off clear and cold. The free air freezing level will be at your house, the surface, in other words. Temps at 5000′ will be in the mid-teens. Clouds move in during the afternoon, and snow starts up around 4pm. We’ll see .1-.2” WV between 4pm Wednesday and 4am Thursday, for 1-3” of dry, fluffy snow. Wind on Wednesday will be light E in the morning and SW 15 in the afternoon and evening.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Thursday looks cold and cloudy. A few snow flurries linger in the morning, followed by dry weather midday and snow overnight. The snow level will be at your house (apocalypse coming soon to you!), also known as “the surface” all day. No accumulation in the morning flurries. The system overnight will bring .4” WV, for 3-4” of dense new snow. This questionable snow quality is caused by the fact that the air will be quite warm, -3C at 8000′. Wind on Thursday will be light and variable. Additional precip comes in Friday and Saturday. Models are predicting the snow level will be around 5500′, so we’re going to have to wait for a bit on a precip type forecast.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light east wind this morning picks up to E 15-20 this afternoon and backs off to light easterlies tonight. Light west wind Tuesday morning picks up to E 10-20 through the entire Gorge in the afternoon as cold air arrives from the east. Wednesday looks like E 50 early and E 60 in the afternoon, reaching in to the metro area. Thursday looks like E 60. Friday looks like E 50 dropping to E 30.

Random Morning Thoughts

Societies create rules and laws and moral and ethical codes in order to keep human behavior within boundaries allowing for safe and predictable living. When the rules go out the window, or when people don’t believe the rules apply to them, chaos ensues and “crime” goes up.

Let’s define “crime” as anything that’s outside our moral and legal codes and harms another human being. For example, people cheat, lie, shoot each other, emotionally abuse others, steal, discriminate, and rape because they feel rules do not apply. We are kept in line by fear of punishment, but we are also kept in line by social pressure – the fear of shame and ostracization.

When we have role models who adhere to a more lax standard of morality, especially role models with access to a wide audience, we can find our personal moral codes shifting. Maybe it is okay to punch a Nazi in the face (popular internet video). It’s not. Maybe it’s okay to tell brown people to “go home”. It’s not.

The shift in our personal morality can be subtle and insidious, so take a moment to contemplate what you believe. Be alert to shifts, and know why they are happening. Have you given something good thought and really changed your mind, or are you being manipulated into new beliefs by what you read and hear. Be alert, be yourself, and be awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

The Nothing is out there again today and will likely stick around. It’s cloudy above it, so no worries, right? Temps will be in the low 30’s early and the upper 30’s later with snow after midnight. If you’re in the fog zone, you’ll have freezing fog and slick roads (and slick everything else, for that matter). East wind. No rainbows.

Tuesday starts off with a round of light snow between 3am and 10am. The snow will be heaviest near Cascade Locks, where 1-3” of mixed snow and rain will fall. Other locations see less than an inch, or maybe an inch or two. Temps will be just below freezing, so main roads may or may not accumulate snow and slush. Side roads will. East wind. No rainbows.

Wednesday looks dry during the day, unless the Euro is right, in which case we see flurries and less than an inch of snow. We’re expecting a bit of snow Wednesday night after midnight: up to 3” in CL, 1-2” in HR, and 1” in The Dalles. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the low 30’s in the afternoon. That said, if it ends up being clear on Tuesday night, temps will be in the teens Wednesday morning. Expect slick roads, especially in in Nothing zone. East wind. No rainbows.
