It’s partly cloudy with a nice blanket of new snow up on Mt. Hood this morning; NWAC’s sensor is reporting 5” of new snow overnight, and the Meadows webcams confirm that the ground is now white. That’s a nice sight for antsy skiers’ eyes. Do take some time to enjoy it, because this week’s wild ride is not conducive to deepening that white blanket, sadly. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Today’s forecast for Mt. Hood includes a beautiful alpenglow sunrise with mostly clear sky early. High clouds move in midday, and precip starts around 4pm. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 3000′ when the precip hits, and will rise quickly to 6500′, staying there overnight. We’ll see .6” water value (WV) between 4pm and 7pm, as the snow level is rising, giving us a couple inches of snow. Then we’ll see the snow switch to rain, with an additional 1.2” WV overnight. Wind today will be NW 25 early, rising to W 40 in the afternoon and W 50-55 overnight.

See below for details.
This weather system will clear the area in the wee hours tomorrow morning, leaving us with orographic (terrain-enhanced) showers, possibly alternating with sunbreaks and possibly not, followed by more rain later. The snow level will be at 5500′ early as the back edge of today’s system moves through, leaving us with .5” WV of mixed rain and snow during the day Tuesday. The next system hits in the afternoon with the snow level at 8000′, giving us 1.5” of rain overnight. As that system exits after midnight, the snow level will drop to 1500′, giving us maybe, if we’re lucky, an inch or two of snow. Wind on Tuesday will be W 50 early, W 70 (whoa!) midday and holding there through the night.
Wednesday looks partly cloudy early, cloudy by noon, with precip starting late in the afternoon. The snow level will be 1500′ early, rising to 6500′ in the afternoon and 10,000′ overnight (can you smell the pineapples?). We’ll see .2-.3” WV before the snow level rises, for a couple inches of snow. That’ll be followed by 2” of rain overnight. Wind will be W 40-50 all day, rising to W 50-60 overnight. As of right now, it looks like Mt. Hood will receive 4” of moisture on Thursday with the snow level at 6500′.

Gorge Wind Forecast
Yesterday ended up being quite a windy day on the river at many locations, so hopefully some of you got out! We’re going to see a windy week this week, as a series of strong weather systems impacts the Northwest. Those will be west winds. Models do seem to be converging a bit on a dry solution with easterly wind for the latter half of the week, but it’s really too early to start planning for that.
Today is starting off with some leftover westerlies, but they’ll fade quickly, leaving us with light and variable (LTV) wind for most of the day. The river water temp, in case you were wondering, is 54 degrees.
Tomorrow sees a warm front move through the region in the morning followed by a cold front and BC surface low in the afternoon. This sets the western Gorge up for gusty, rainy 25-35 all day long with 30-40 east of Hood River (maybe east of The Dalles – it’s hard to say) in the afternoon, lasting through sunset. NOAA is calling for patchy blowing dust and a high of 60 degrees at Arlington tomorrow, so it’s looking like a lovely day on the river! Watch out for stuff floating in the river – all this rain will have washed debris into the Columbia.
Wednesday looks LTV all day long. If the long-range forecast is correct, Thursday looks like gusty 24-28. It’s possible we’ll see some easterlies in the couple days after that, but with models still not quite agreeing, it’s silly to make a long-range call.
Random Morning Thoughts
I find myself deeply saddened, as we all are, by the recent terrorism in Paris and Lebanon. I also find myself deeply saddened by the near-daily mass gun violence in this country. More so than the attacks, I worry about our response.
We, humanity, don’t have a long-term plan for dealing with suicidal violence on either a local level, a national level, or a worldwide scale. Instead, we react and retaliate, meeting violence with violence. We operate, globally at least, on the outdated notion of an-eye-for-an-eye. I do not know how to combat violence committed by people who no longer value their own life. I do not have the solutions. All I know is that escalation without contemplation is a slippery slope. Especially escalation accompanied by anger and bigoted talk.
We probably cannot change this on a global level, sadly. However, we can change it in our own lives. Revenge can feel sweet, but that sweetness is shortlived. The next time you want revenge, see if you can choose conversation instead. Rather than widening the wound between you and your antagonist, see if you can heal it. We may not be able to create peace on a global scale, but we can work toward creating it in our community. Sure, it takes courage to get revenge. It’s braver to sit down face-to-face and create understanding. Be brave, be awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s mostly clear outside my bay window this morning; it looks like we’ll see the blazing yellow ball this morning! By afternoon, however, the clouds and rain will return, with heavy rain overnight, so enjoy the morning! Temps will be in the low 40’s early (I hear there are icy roads in Parkdale) and the upper 40’s this afternoon. Light wind, 11% chance of rainbows.
Tomorrow looks partly cloudy and showery for much of the day with heavy rain overnight. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Nuking wind. 87% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks dry for much of the day, with partly cloudy sky early, cloudy sky midday, with sprinkles in the afternoon and rain overnight. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. 1% chance of rainbows early. Thursday looks like a soaker.
White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
I took a short lap on Hospital Hill yesterday and it was a little slick, but mostly perfect. I heard that Post was rather sticky after the afternoon rain. If Hospital is good, Whoopdee and Syncline are likely good. Also, today looks like a light wind day, so you’ll have a ncie day on the roads too. Tomorrow and Wednesday look very windy, so if you like road biking in the wind, those are your days. Also, there are work parties on Falls Creek both this weekend and next.
