Gorge Wind Forecast
Ho hum. See, that’s what I get for trusting in a 48 hour forecast and taking a day off – in 24 hours, the forecast went from calm wind to 15-18 for yesterday. My apologies if that messed up your Sunday. Anyhow, here we are on a smoky Monday morning with high pressure offshore, low pressure over northern California, and a heat low in the Washington desert. While models are not optimistic about the wind today, the gradients and gut instinct are more positive. The day started early, at 5am, with .08 from Portland to The Dalles. River flow, in case you were wondering, is 126kcfs and temp is 71 degrees.
We’ll have light westerlies at 5-10 to start the day. The wind will pick up late morning to 13-16 from Cascade Locks to the Wunderbar, filling in from Hood River to Mosier this afternoon. That 13-16 prediction is already above model predictions, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see 16-19 this afternoon, especially in the Stevenson area.
The 4/3 GFS likes tomorrow a bit more than today, predicting 7-10 in the morning, slowly building to 15-18 in the afternoon. It also thinks the wind will spread further east tomorrow, filling in at Rowena and Doug’s. Given the strength of the desert heat low and the offshore high pressure, this seems reasonable.
Models are struggling a bit with the location of the California low pressure system, and that will impact what happens on Wednesday. As of right now, a 7-10 start and 13-16 afternoon from Cascade Locks to Hood River seems like a reasonable call. That said, if the low shifts a little further north on Wednesday, we could see atmospheric instability impacting wind quality. Same goes on Thursday.
Looking long-range, because we can, not because it’s reliable, we see a breakdown in the pattern starting on Friday. Cooler air starts to filter in above us, leading to a larger cross-Cascade temperature-pressure gradient. Assuming the models have the timing correct (unlikely), we’ll see low to mid 20’s on Friday and upper 20’s on Saturday. However… as of right now it looks like the cooldown will be of the variety that leads to rangy, inconsistent wind. That said, it’ll be nice to see some stronger westerlies again, even if they are inconsistent. So, let’s keep an eye on the weekend and see how the models interpret things as we get closer.

Random Morning Thoughts
My cat is a funny creature. Lap-sitting and sleeping on her human isn’t explicit-enough attention. She requires lots of petting, food-tossing and head-scratching to know that her mother cares.
Humans also vary in the forms of affection they find nourishing. For some, a look is enough to convey love. Others need physical affection. Still others need words. None of these categories is exclusive – many of us prefer different forms of affection at different times from different people.
It’s important to understand what we need, and it’s also important not to place ourselves in boxes. The question is not what type of person we are. Instead, we need to develop enough self-knowledge to know what we need in any given situation, or at least to express that we don’t know what we need. When we can do that, we’re happier and more able to build stronger relationships.
And with that, I leave you to your own devices. How do you know what you need from your loved ones, superiors, and other people in your life? How does that vary by situation? What do you need right now? You’re awesome for even contemplating this. Have an awesome day!

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.
Upcoming Events
Today’s events include community meditation at noon at Trinity Natural Medicine and 7pm at Bethel Congregational in White Salmon. There’s $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30, pickup kickball at Daubenspeck Park in Bingen at 6, sailboat rides with the Gorge Sailing team starting at 6 at the Hood River Marina, and three by-donation yoga classes: 6pm at Yoga Samadhi, 6:30 at the Mt. Hood Town Hall, and 6:45 at Pure Yoga in The Dalles. Tomorrow night is my favorite event: meditation with the monks from Pacific Hermitage at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30. I almost forgot: sounds like the Dirty Fingers crew may be planning another Klickitat float tomorrow. You’ll want to give the shop a call for more details.
If you’re planning for the weekend, here are some options: the Perseid Meteor Shower in the northern sky early Saturday and Sunday morning, the Post Canyon 50k trail run Saturday, the Bridge of the Gods Run on Sunday, and the Neon Classic Drag Races in Dallesport on Sunday. For something less physically intense, Dufur has Vintage Dufur Days all weekend long.
Oh, and there’s a free half-day meditation retreat led by the monks from Pacific Hermitage at Yoga Samadhi from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday. The Jungle Book plays at Jackson Park in Hood River Saturday night and The Princess Bride plays at Sorosis Park in The Dalles Saturday night.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!
Have an awesome day today!
