Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! HAPPY CANADA DAY! Sounds like a fun day was had by all on the river yesterday. We’re in for three more fun ones this week, including a ginormous day Tuesday, before the wind (probably) shuts off for a few days and leaves us sweltering. In case you haven’t heard, the Hood River Bridge has reopened.

Let’s look at Monday. For some of you, it’s back-to-work day. For those of us not stuck at work, we’ll have a windy one. A weak trough moves inland (hence the high clouds to start), and strong offshore high pressure builds in by the afternoon. For best results, wait a few hours. Early pressures were 30.13/30.06/30.04 for gradients of 0.07 and 0.02. Nothing to write home about, but wait… The later it gets, the stronger the pressure gets offshore and the lower it falls in the desert. By late morning, we’ll have gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 14-17 from Lyle to Rufus and 10-13 farther east.
Early afternoon sees the westerlies steady out and rise to 25-28, maybe a touch more, from Stevenson to Doug’s. By late afternoon, the wind will be 25-28 from Stevenson to Mosier with 28-32 from Lyle to Rufus and 23-26 at Arlington. Remember that those forecasts are approximately iWind/iKite sensor readings, meaning 25 at the Hatch/Rowena/Doug’s is equivalent to approximately 30-31 at The Wall and Arlington and Stevenson. River flow over the last 24 hours was 128-180kcfs, river temp is 64.94F, and high temp forecast is 79F under increasingly clear sky.
Tuesday starts with solid marine clouds west of the Hatch and a few marine clouds east to perhaps Mosier. Dawn Patrol kicks off, actually at dawn, with gusty 22-25 from Viento to Mosier. The wind, thanks to very strong offshore high pressure, rises to 28-32+ from Stevenson to Doug’s by late morning with 22-25 at Rufus. By early afternoon, the wind picks up to 28-32 from Stevenson to Rufus (30-35 possible at times with 35+ not out of the question at The Wall). Arlington joins with 23-26. East of there: less. High temp: 75F for Hood River and 88F for Pasco.
Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.
High pressure starts to shift inland on Wednesday, but we’ll have one last day. Marine clouds fill in west of Hood River for the dawn patrol session. This gives us 23-26 from Viento to Mosier. As the metro area heats up and high pressure shifts a little more inland, westerlies fall to 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier and pick up to 17-20 from Lyle to Doug’s. To the east: relatively light.
Extended: Models are starting to form a consensus around hot, dry, probably-calm weather for the latter half of next week and first part of the weekend. Probably. There’s still not enough certainty to write off the wind for next weekend. But it’ll probably be calm Thursday and Friday. Probably. Let’s see if there’s better agreement tomorrow, shall we? Have a great time on the river today!
