Monday. Happy 420 day. Nuking wind this week. Possible pineapples this weekend.

Hopefully you’re in mid-summer kiting or windsurfing shape, because mid-summer wind is headed this way this week. Today, however, looks like a nice day for your glassy river playtime. Expect east wind at 10-13 this morning at Steven’s Locks and Rooster’s Rocks. The wind will switch midday, becoming glassy for a while and then picking up to W 8-11 or maybe W 10-13 from Steven’s Locks to Hood River late in the day.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind

A big marine push tomorrow morning sets us up for a big day on the river. We’ll start with W 15-18 from Swell or Mosier to Doug’s. The wind will pick up as the day goes on, hitting W 26-30 from, well, it kinda depends on timing. I think we’ll see a period of 22-25 from Steven’s Locks to Doug’s early afternoon, but I suspect the strongest wind will arrive too late for the Hood River area, ending up focused at Lyle-Doug’s, and possibly getting gusty as a front approaches the coast. Anyway, plenty of wind tomorrow for you to get on the water.

If you like lots of wind, Wednesday is THE DAY, as far as I’m concerned. Expect 26-30 right off the bat, likely from Mosier to Doug’s, but possibly including Swell and Hood River. It all depends on the cloud line, right? By midday, we’ll be looking at 28-32+ from Swell to Rufus, with 24-28 at Arlington.

Thursday looks lighter, with 13-16 to start and 21-24 in the afternoon.

Out on the coast, expect the following (north/central/south): 10-15/15-20/20-25, 7′ @13. Tomorrow: 25-30/25-30/40, 8′ @ 12. Wednesday: 10-15/20-25/40, 11′ @ 10.

Random Morning Thoughts

A friend of mine posted on her Facebook the other day about a loss she was experiencing and how she’d appreciate messages of love. I think this is awesome. We all want approval. We all want to know that people care about us. We all want to hear how awesome we are (even if it makes us squirm and not know what to say in return). I love that my friend had the courage to ask.

I wish that more people used Facebook to be vulnerable and open, because I think it has the power to create more connection in the world. I wish that more people had the willingness to ask for what they need in general, and that more people had the comfort in vulnerability to tell other people (randomly, even) what they love about them.

Hell, try it out today. Call up someone and tell them the things you love about them. Just one person, and not the closest person. Pick someone you haven’t done that with ever. Ask their permission before you go spouting off, but if they say yes, you might just make their day. Have fun with it!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It looks icky out there today, just like it was icky out yesterday. Sunshine, temps nearing 80 degrees, light wind. Ew. I don’t know how any of you can stand it. Don’t worry – it’ll change up some tomorrow.

Expect some marine clouds in the western Gorge tomorrow morning with temps in the low 50’s to start. The high tomorrow will only make it to 70 or so, and we’ll see some high clouds in the afternoon. Along with the 10 degree drop in temps, expect nuking west wind. Wednesday looks even cooler with a slight chance of showers in the morning under partly cloudy sky. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon with nuking west wind and a 14% chance of rainbows.

The long range forecast is a little up in the air through Thursday, but seems to be converging on a solution of rainy weather, possibly a few pineapples, for the weekend.

Road and Mountain Biking

You’ll find perfect dirt in Post. You’ll find lots of wildflowers at Columbia Hills and Whoopdee. You’ll find cow poop (and no dogs allowed because the cows are out) at Hospital Hill, and you’ll find ticks, wildflowers and poison oak at Syncline. You’ll find dust at 8-mile and Knebal, perfect dirt at Lewis River and Falls Creek, and unknown conditions at Plains of Abraham. Get your riding in now, because weather forecasts are predicting lots of rain this coming weekend.

In road biking news, it’s going to be epic today. I finally got a report from LL/Vista. Lake Branch Road has two thin, short areas of snow. Lost Lake and Vista Ridge Roads are clear of snow. The Trout Lake Loop is open. This means that every single road ride in the Gorge is now open. In out-of-the-area news, I just looked at McKenzie pass, and it is still closed. I am sure Janice will let us know when it’s open to bikes.

Upcoming Events

Today’s Monday. There’s free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. There’s community yoga at the MHTH at 6pm. There’s also community yoga at Yoga Samadhi at 6pm. Coming up tomorrow, there’s community yoga at 8am at Flow. There’s pickup rugby at 5pm at the Hood River Marina, and there’s a trail run at Post Canyon at 6:15. There’s also $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tomorrow night. There’s also meditation with the monks from Pacific Hermitage at Yoga Samadhi tomorrow night at 6:30pm. This is my new favorite Gorge activity. =)

Coming up next weekend, it’s the Oregon Trail Rally with rally car racing all over Hood River and Wasco counties. It’s the Cherry Festival 3k/5k

Next weekend is the Anson’s Bike Buddies bike collection drive. This local charity (started by an 8 year old), collects old bikes (and parts, but not helmets), fixes them up, and gives them away to kids who don’t have bikes. If you have an old bike sitting in the garage, pull it out and bring it to the Cascade Eye Center parking lot next Saturday and Sunday (the 25th and 26th) between 10am to 2pm.

Have an awesome day today!
