Random Morning Thoughts

My therapist and I were texting yesterday about our subprime nervous systems, and over the course of this discussion, we came to the conclusion that we’re both going after the end of unnecessary suffering as part of our therapeutic goals. Our goal, by the way, is also known as enlightenment. That’s not quite what therapists generally have in mind, but it seems like a worthy goal to both of us, so we’re going for it. I do believe this means I’ll be in therapy for the next several lifetimes…

Some people, I think, start out closer to that goal. For example, people who were the recipients of “good-enough” parenting (Winnicott, 1953) find themselves blessed with self-love, resilience, a greater proportion of positive emotions, and greater ability to regulate those emotions. So, my question becomes this: can those blessed people purposefully share their gifts with others?

Lots of research shows that humans are capable of regulating each other’s emotional states. So my thought here is that if one person cultivates a state of mind, they can entrain another person in that mindstate by being fully present. Once the person is entrained, they can focus on that mindstate in order to rewire their nervous system and make that state more likely to arise spontaneously.

Now, that’s not going to lead to enlightenment, unfortunately. However, it might allow two people with complementary strengths to mold each other into higher-functioning beings. If nothing else, if you play with it, you’ll have some very intimate moments with your play partner. One person generates a state, and the other person stares into their eyes and allows their mind to be pulled along. Then they switch, taking advantage of their unique strengths. What could be more fun than that? Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

I just wandered outside to check the sky, and it was cloudy. If it’s partly cloudy on Mt. Hood right now, and it’s cloudy down here, that must be the Nothing. Run and hide! We’ll see mostly cloudy sky this morning with a few sprinkles, becoming increasingly sunny and dry this afternoon. Light west wind. 21% chance of rainbows.

Tuesday will probably start with some Nothing, but may be clear. Hard to say. Anyway, temps will be in the low 30’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks partly cloudy with temps in the mid 30’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. East wind, no rainbows. The rest of the week looks dry and sunny. Yeah!

Road and Mountain Biking

We only had .06” of rain yesterday, which means that Syncline and Hospital Hill should be good to go today. Post and Whoopdee are likely too muddy still, but give them a couple of days, and they’ll be rideable. There’s dry weather in the forecast all week! Today also looks great for road biking. Tomorrow doesn’t look great: sub-freezing early and strong east wind in the afternoon. Wednesday looks better, and so does Thursday. Yes, it’s going to be a great week to ride! And don’t forget: the wildflowers are out at Syncline.

Upcoming Events

Happy Monday. There’s free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. Coming up Tuesday, there’s pickup touch rugby at 5pm at the ballfields next to Jackson Park, there’s Zumba at 6:30 at the Parkdale Community Center, and there’s meditation with the monks from Pacific Hermitage and 25-30 of your best friends at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30pm.
