Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Typical La Nina weather returns next weekend. Between now and the, we have plenty of sun, a few inches of snow on Tuesday, and plenty more sunshine. Groom conditions should be quite good between now and then. If we dive a little deeper into the details from next weekend on, we see a standard La Nina / active-phase MJO. Systems swing through with an approach heading of SW or W or somewhere in between. This presents a pretty clear picture of alternating periods of rain and snow starting late next weekend and lasting until… well, that’s not clear yet!
For Monday, we’ll have intermittent high clouds all day. The free air freezing level will be 6500′ in the morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ (with colder areas below) overnight. Wind will be NW 20-30 all day long dropping to NW 15-25 overnight. Hint: the Meadows Nordic groomer says that he reverse-tilled everything today. Skating conditions are reportedly 11/10. Other groom: loose granular and frozen granular with scoured spots. Corn snow on and off the groom later.
Tuesday starts out cloudy with light snow and stays that way. A beastly cold front swinging in late afternoon from the NE will turn the snowfall into easterly orographics after a day of westerly orographics. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 2000′ midday, and will fall to 0′ near Mt. Hood overnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 3-4” new snow. Another 0.2” WE falls in the evening with NW wind, for 2-3” more. Easterlies arrive after midnight and bring another 0.2” WE for 2-4” powder. Expect that to be distributed in odd places thanks to opposite-to-normal wind.
Wednesday looks pretty darn nice. Not only will there be powder, there will be epic packed powder groom and park features. The sky will be clear (with low clouds) early, sunny all day, and high overcast late. Freezing level: 0′ early, 500-1000′ midday, and 0′ after midnight. Wind: E 10 early, E 15 midday, and E 10 after midnight.
Thursday will be high overcast and warmer with the freezing level rising to 3000′ in the afternoon and 5000′ overnight. Friday looks sunny and warmer. Moisture starts up sometime next weekend and rotates between rain and snow for the next several days. As is often the case with these very active periods, the details are unclear. Vote for the GFS if you want more moisture. Have a great week!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
Please be very selective about what trails you ride today – some are too wet. Some are perfect brown pow. Ride those! If you ride the trails when they are muddy, you’ll damage them. Then everyone has to spend time fixing the damage instead of building you new trails. Best responses if you did ride: 1) donate money to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards; 2) show up for as many trail work parties as you can this spring.
Local Events
