Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Gorge Wind Forecast

There are lots of wind events of various sorts happening this week (see events section), and it looks like all of them are going to have decent conditions. Yay! But first: a rest day, or a nearly-rest day if you’re chasing easterlies midday. Strongest conditions this week (for those of you seeking the elusive “nuker”) will be Tuesday evening, Wednesday morning, and Saturday (probably for Saturday – it’s a long ways out still!).

Monday sets up with a heat low to the west and a ridge moving east. That’s the opposite of what we want for westerlies! Early wind will be light and variable. Easterlies pick up to 15ish midday from Rooster to Viento. East of there: calm in Hood River with light easterlies, 5mph or so, to the east. Afternoon wind fades to 10ish between Rooster and Viento. River flow readings are 170-234kcfs, river temp is 64F, and high temp forecast is 94F.

The heat low shifts east to the Cascades Tuesday morning and to the desert in the afternoon. Timing of this shift keeps changing. Earlier is definitely better for windsports, and the latest model run was trending later. Expect Tuesday to start calm with no hint of what’s to come. Midday: 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon: 25-29 Stevenson to Doug’s with a possible dip near Swell. Evening: 27-31+, maybe a lot of “+” between Stevenson and Avery with 24-28 from Celilo to Arlington. For the nukingest results, hang out between Stevenson and Mosier. For less, head east. High temp: 94F. Notes: there is some instability predicted on Tuesday afternoon; this could cause that aforementioned lull near Swell and could have a detrimental impact on quality. However, if stabilizing cooler air can push in late afternoon or early evening (and it’s predicted to do so), the nukingness will be back.

“Nuking” describes Wednesday morning’s Dawn Patrol. I will not be putting out a forecast on Wednesday morning because I’m getting some of that Dawn Patrol. Perhaps we can have a Tuesday night forecast for Wednesday? Oh, wait, I’ll be on the river Tuesday evening too! Anyway… 29-33 starts the day from Viento to Mosier with 20-23 east of Mosier to Arlington. Models drag marine clouds all the way to Cascade Locks and keep them there until mid-morning, so Stevenson will likely be in the 10-15 range to start. Models indicate a slow decline in gradients during the day. By early afternoon, westerlies dip to 25-29 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 11-14 at Rufus. Later: 23-26 from Stevenson to Doug’s. High temp: 83F and quite muggy. Thursday’s forecast keeps changing. Currently: upper teens to low 20’s. Friday: low 20’s. Saturday: nuking. Sunday: not as windy as Saturday, but still quite windy. Enjoy your rest day today! You’ll need it to make it through this upcoming week.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Gorge Downwind Champs run 7/11-7/16 and are staged out of the Skamania County Fairgrounds. The Laser Gorge Blowout is scheduled Friday. Bridge of the Gods Kitefest and the (all windsport) Blowout is scheduled Friday-Sunday. The Race Across Oregon starts Friday. The Wind Regatta runs Saturday and Sunday in Cascade Locks.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
