Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
Today, Monday, is starting off super windy and snowy on Mt. Hood. We’ll see the snow level at sea level this morning, rising to 4000′ by 10am, 6000′ around 1pm, dropping to 5000′ around 7pm, and shooting up to 9000′ around midnight before falling to 6000′ on Tuesday morning. I think we’ll see 6-9” of new snow before a switch to pouring rain tonight – we’re expecting 2-3” of rain overnight. Wind today will be W 50 early, fading to W 35 after noon, becoming SW 20 mid-evening, and ramping up to W 60 after midnight. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Tuesday starts off with rain or mixed precipitation and quickly switches to orographic (terrain-enhanced) snowfall. The snow level will be 6000′ early, crashing to 1500′ mid-morning and less than 500′ overnight. We’ll see .4-.7” water value (WV) before the snow ends around 4pm, for 4-7” of new snow. It’s possible the wind will enhance that snowfall amount by 1.5x, so let’s keep an eye on that. Wind on Tuesday will be W 60 early, W 50 for much of the day, and WNW 50 in the evening, fading to light and variable after midnight. Those wind speeds will likely have an impact on lift operations, slowly, if not stopping, some lifts.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished
Wednesday looks clear and dry. The free air freezing level will be less than 500′ early, rising to 6000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be light and variable early and SW 10 in the afternoon and evening.
Thursday currently starts off cloudy and turns snow, with the snow level around 4000′ early and 6500′ when precip hits in the evening. We’re currently looking at .4-.6” WV of mixed precipitation. Maybe that will change?
Finally, you’re going to think this is nuts, but…. if you’re going skiing in the Gorge today, be cautious. These last few cold and dry days have left a layer of rime on the slopes. The heavy snow we’re getting today could potentially slide – in other words, there is avalanche danger on your backyard ski slopes today.

Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s early Monday morning, and the wind near Rooster, Stevenson and Arlington has turned westerly. That’s cool, but the central Gorge has not experienced such a shift, and models suggest the central Gorge won’t see west wind until 10am Tuesday. Anyway, expect W 13-16 for much of the day except from Hood River to The Dalles. We may see some light east wind tonight. Tuesday starts off with W 26-30 everywhere (gusty in the western Gorge) and builds to W 30-40 east of The Dalles. Wednesday looks like E 10-15 early and E 30-35 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts
I got nothing to say today, mostly because I’d like to get this out before I go on to the rest of my work. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s snowing this morning, and hell, I don’t know exactly what it’s going to do today! Expect temps in the low 20’s this morning and the low 30’s this afternoon. Will it get above freezing? Ugh… it’s going to be close! Anyway, expect snow this morning, switching to sleet and/or freezing rain around noon, hopefully switching to rain later. We’ll see 3-6” of snow before the switch to something else, followed by very heavy rain tonight. You may want to shovel out your storm drains. Light wind. 4% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks very rainy early with showers and light rain after sunrise through 3pm. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Strong west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks dry and possibly even clear without Nothing! Temps will be in the mid to upper 30’s all day, possibly dropping below freezing overnight. East wind. No rainbows.
