Mt. Hood Forecast
Stormy weather continues on the mountain this morning before turning clear and sunny for the rest of the week with the possible exception of some scattered clouds on Friday. By the end of the week, we should be seeing excellent corn snow.
Monday, however, starts out blizzardy. Wind yesterday did end up shutting down the lifts at Meadows due to gusts in the 70’s. Worth noting: there was also a gust to 75mph on the Maryhill Bridge, same as the top of Mt. Hood Express. So, the stormy weather gets less stormy as the day goes on, eventually transitioning to orographic snow flurries in the afternoon and clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 1500′ all day, and the freezing level will dip lower than that overnight. About 0.1” to 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, for 1-2” of additional powder. A trace is forecast overnight. Also worth mentioning: 5” fell last night, but it’s going to be extremely wind-affected, wind-distributed, and contaminated by tree litter. Wind today: NW 35-40 in the morning, WNW 25-30 in the afternoon, and NW 15-20 overnight.
Tuesday starts out clear and stays that way. The free air freezing level will be 0-500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: NW 15-20 in the morning, W 5-10 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight.
Wednesday looks sunny and warmer. Wax with the yellow wax, or you’ll be sticking by midday! Freezing level: 8000′ in the morning and 9000′ overnight. Wind: light and variable early, SW 5-10 in the afternoon, and WSW 15-25 overnight. Sunny weather continues Thursday and Friday with Thursday being the warmer of the two. Models hint at some light precip for the weekend, but are far from clear yet about the exact details of the forecast. Have a great week!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Yesterday was one for the record books, or at least close to it. Highest recorded wind gust on iWind/iKite was 75mph at the Maryhill Bridge. It was windy enough to start several fires and take down at least one set of power lines (starting a fire). Chris A. had to stop wing-dinging because rocks were blowing into his eyes. That’s windy!
Today will not be like that, but it’ll still be windy thanks to an impressive 1044mb offshore high. Morning gradients: .08/.12. That says “Rufus” to me. Morning wind: very gusty and all over the map. It’ll steady out this afternoon with gusty 13-16 in the cloudy western Gorge (except Viento, where it’ll be windier) and 24-28 from Lyle to Arlington. River flow is 126kcfs (the swell looked great at Swell yesterday, btw), river temp is 44F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 52F.
Tuesday looks lighter. Westerlies start at 7-11mph all through the Gorge. High pressure starts to build inland, which shuts down the eastern Gorge. If you want afternoon river time, try Stevenson to Mosier for a model-beating gusty 17-20. High temp forecast: 55F. Wednesday starts light and variable. Models hint at midday easterlies in the 20-25 range, but I could see that changing. High temp: 67F. We’re back to westerlies on Thursday; as of now, the forecast is gusty 22-25 with a high temp in the 60’s. Enjoy!
Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

Cycling
Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! Post Canyon: GP is still CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail in the next couple of weeks, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer. Other news: Mountain View Cycles women’s ride starts up this Thursday. Bottom of Post at 5:30pm. Dirty Fingers has Sunday gravel rides.
