Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday was one stellar day to be outside on the river. Today will be different, but still has the potential for fun. We then slide into a more active weather pattern. That doesn’t mean it won’t be windy; it just means the wind will be more difficult to predict and more difficult to find.

Looking at Monday, we find offshore high pressure and inland low pressure most of the day. A surface low approaches the OR coast in the afternoon. This leaves us with another windy day: expect 17-20ish most of the day from Stevenson to Mosier. The wind is likely to drop after 5pm. Eastern Gorge sites will languish at 5-10mph or less. River flow is 55,400cfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 71F under high overcast sky.

Tuesday’s focus will be a cold front swinging through. This has the potential for some moderately strong wind for a short period in the late afternoon or evening. The morning, however, starts light and variable. As the front approaches, the wind jumps to gusty 20-25 from Mosier to Rufus early afternoon with gusty 12-15 in the western Gorge and gusty 14-17 east of Rufus. Models suggest a brief period of gusty 25-30 from Stevenson to Rufus, or maybe to Arlington, after 2pm. High temp: 65F.

Low pressure settles inland on Wednesday and clouds stick around all day, at least in the west. Morning wind will be light and variable in the western Gorge with 12-15 east of Rufus. Afternoon: gusty 11-15 from Stevenson to The Dalles with light/variable wind to the east. High temp: 59F. Models suggest Thursday and Friday will be be light and variable. The general weather picture for next weekend looks active. We’ll keep a close eye on it to see if one of these systems can set off the mythical Fall Arlington Session. Enjoy your week!
