Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! It’s been a long stretch of offshore high pressure (the “right” setup for wind), and now we’ll move into a week or so where offshore low pressure (not the “right” setup) dominates the weather picture. Simply said, the result of this is less gradient and less wind. But not zero wind. Moderate westerlies stick around for the week. Expect them to be up-and-down and rather unreliable.

For Monday, we have an upper level low off the coast. It swings a weak, dry system through this afternoon, which will nudge the wind speeds. up. Generally speaking, the Rowena stretch tends to see the strongest wind in this setup. To start the day, we had pressures of 30.05/30.01/30.00 for onshore gradients of 0.04 and 0.01. The wind wasn’t doing much: less than 10mph pretty much everywhere with a reading of 14 at Viento on the iWind/iKite sensor. The wind slowly builds to 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River this morning with 10ish mph to the east. Sometime between noon and 2pm, westerlies jump to gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River and 14-17 from Mosier to Rufus. As this system moves inland, the wind drops to gusty 16-19 at Swell and holds at gusty 20-23 elsewhere between Stevenson and Mosier. From Lyle to Arlington, the wind rises to gusty 23-26. It may read as much as 25-28 from Rowena to Rufus. Expect very gusty conditions from The Wall to Rufus; this isn’t quite the right setup. In the evening, the wind drops to 22-25ish. And remember that the sensors (and thus this forecast, which is calibrated to those sensors) at The Wall and Arlington read high compared to Swell. River flow over the last 24 hours was 106-132kcfs (that’s a bit of an approximation – the sites I usually use are down this morning), river temp is 71.06F, and high temp forecast is 76F for Hood River and 82F for Arlington.
We’ll be relying on thermal assistance on Tuesday as another weak low lingers offshore. The day starts calmish west of The Dalles with 10-13 from Rufus to Boardman. Midday wind rises to 12-15 from Stevenson to Rufus. Afternoon: gusty 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier and gusty 20-23 from Lyle to Rufus. High temp: 76F for Hood River and 81F for Arlington.

A weak low pushes inland Wednesday morning and dissipates. It drops some rain in the morning west of Hood River. Another low replaces it offshore. If you’re guessing this isn’t a great setup, you’re right. Still, we’ll have some wind after a slow morning. Afternoon westerlies rise to 13-16 west of The Dalles and 17-20 east of The Dalles.

Extended: models currently have a low moving from south to north, east of the Cascade Crest, on Thursday afternoon. If this holds, it’ll be similar to what we saw a couple nights ago: a blast of strong, very gusty wind for a short period followed by instability and showers. Generally speaking, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday look to bring active weather. Showers, gusty moderate westerlies… honestly, there’s too many moving pieces to make a precise forecast at this point. Generally speaking, the setup is not ideal. Let’s leave it there for now. Have a great day on the river!
