Monday (and maybe Tuesday) forecast. HOT, HOT, HOT!

There’s still no snow in the Mt. Hood forecast, but there’s plenty of sunshine if spring skiing is your thing. Meadows, remember, is closed Monday through Thursday this week. According to T-Line’s website, there’s no Palmer Cat Ski during the week, so the Mile is as high as you get without hiking. Speaking of… Meadows’…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Expect a sunny day on Mt. Hood Monday. The free air freezing level will be 13,000′. Temps at 5000′ will start out in the upper 40’s and max out near 60 degrees. Light wind. Tuesday looks exactly like Monday with the possibility for some high clouds in the evening.

Wednesday may end up a little different than Monday and Tuesday. The day starts off sunny with the free air freezing level at 13,000′. As colder air pushes into the west side in the afternoon, we may see a few clouds move in. Or maybe not. Anyway, 5000′ temps will max out in the low 50’s on Wednesday.

It’s possible that we’ll see some sprinkles on Mt. Hood on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, but the weather models have really been backing off on precip amounts over the last couple of model runs. So let’s just wait and see before we make any dire weekend weather predictions, okay?

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a rather breezing morning in the western Gorge, with Rooster putting on a show of 30-35. Stevenson will pick up to 25-30 by mid-morning. The wind will fade away to 10-15 at Stevenson and Rooster this afternoon with the wind picking up to E 5 or so from Viento eastward to The Dalles. Tuesday starts off with E 5-10, picks up to E 15-20 mid-morning, and fades to E 5-10 in the afternoon. Wednesday starts off with very light west wind. As marine air pushes into Portland during the day, we’ll see the westerlies pick up to 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier by noon and to gusty 24-28 from Stevenson to The Dalles by mid to late afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m looking out my window this morning at my view of the Gorge and Mt. Adams, and I’m feeling a lot of awe and wonder. It’s really beautiful here, and it warms my heart to sit here and soak it in. It’s the simple things, right?

That’s got me thinking about our endless pursuit of the new, the extraordinary, the unique. For example, I get all fired up thinking about riding my bike to school – it’s silly, it’s out of the ordinary, it makes other people laugh in bemusement… all good things. An yet… sometimes we get caught up in the chase of newness. On some level, we’re probably biologically wired for this – In cave-dwelling times, new places meant new food sources and new mates.

Now, though, we have to learn to balance that endless seeking with appreciation for what is right here, right now. After all, our basic needs are mostly likely going to get met. We can stop and breathe and enjoy the wonder of everyday life. There’s a lovely balance to develop – if we can feed our sense of awe and wonder on the ordinary, we can seek newness and excitement out of choice, not compulsion. We can let our playtime be a balanced complement to our downtime.

So take a moment and look around you this morning. There’s awe and wonder waiting right in front of you (think about what went into making your smartphone or computer – humans have accomplished wondrous things!). You just gotta take the time to find it. When you do, you might just find that everyday life brings you as much as the best powder day, the best day on the river, or the most perfect dirt. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s another faux-summer day here in the Gorge, or perhaps it’s just a lost summer day that somehow found itself in the middle of spring. Anyway, expect sunshine today with morning temps in the mid 40s’ and afternoon highs in the freakin’ low 80’s. Holy smokes! East wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks sunny and H-O-T hot! We’ll start off the day in the upper 40’s and finish off in the mid 80’s. Light east wind. No rainbows. Maybe we’ll see a few high clouds on Wednesday and maybe not. Maybe we’ll even see a few raindrops overnight, but likely not. Anyway, temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, strong west wind late. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I have nothing more to say other than to repeat that there’s a lot of fun dirt out there right now. Once again, here’s your rundown of what’s open: Nestor, Hospital Hill (no dogs), Post (top to bottom), Syncline, Whoopdee, Oak Ridge, Gorge 400, and Kitchen Sink. The next HRATS work party is 5/1, and Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike donation drive next week. If you have a used bike, please consider donating it to this great local charity. They’ll fix it up and give you a tax writeoff.

Upcoming Events

In events today, there’s free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1, community yoga at Samadhi at 6 tonight, pickup basketball at the Town Hall at 6:30, and community zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30. Looking at tomorrow, there’s free yoga at 4:30 at flow, pickleball at May Street Elementary at 5:15, pickup rugby at the Waterfront Park at 5:30, and another Zumba class in Parkdale. There’s also my favorite (sadly in conflict with my class schedule this quarter), meditation with the monks from Pacific Hermitage at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi. There’s free guided full moon snowshoe tour at Timberline on Wednesday night.

If you’re thinking about next weekend, it’s Earth Day weekend. There are at least 6 work parties at local parks: Hood River’s Waterfront Park, Ainsworth, Rooster Rock, Mayer Park, the Indian Creek Trail, and the EasyCLIMB trail . Also next weekend, on Sunday, Anson’s Bike Buddies will be taking used bike donations on Sunday, whether those bikes work or not, at Cascade Eye Center from 10-3.

Have an awesome day today!
