Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Clear sky and clean air is back, and so are the westerlies. Add in marine clouds starting on Tuesday for a stretch of stronger wind. Models all like the idea of the strongest day being Tuesday, so carve time out of your day if nuking westerlies are your thing.

Looking at Monday, we see an approaching frontal system impacting the wind. Keep that in mind for the afternoon. The day breaks with gradients of 0.11 (pdx-dls) and 0.04 (dls-psc), a good sign for a chance to head east. Morning wind starts with 17-20 from Viento to the Hook with 10-13 east to Arlington and 5-10 at Stevenson. By late morning, the wind builds to 22-25 from Viento to Mosier with 18-22 at Avery, 10-13 out east and 14-17 at Stevenson. Remember that front I mentioned earlier? It will disrupt the afternoon wind. Expect areas west of Mosier to drop to 11-14 or so. Don’t panic. Head anywhere between Mosier and Arlington for gusty 26-29. River flow is 94,600cfs. River temp is 71F. High temp forecast is 83F for Hood River and 93F for Arlington.

As the front swings through tonight, it pulls deep marine clouds far into the Gorge. A shortwave in the afternoon keeps the clouds around. Dawn Patrol wind may be 20-24 from Viento to Hood River, but it will back off soon, eventually falling to gusty 10-14. From Mosier to Threemile, the day starts with 24-27. Very strong offshore ridging combines with low pressure inland for afternoon westerlies at 28-32 from Mosier to Arlington. High temp Hood River: 72F. Arlington: 77F.

Looking at Wednesday, we see 12-15 everywhere to start the day. Partly cloudy sky in Hood River quickly turns clear, meaning the western Gorge will be the place. It’s going to be a slow and steady build to gusty 20-23 from Viento to The Dalles with light and variable wind out east. Stevenson may stay cloudy; if it does, the wind won’t climb above 10mph. Looking deeper into the week, we see quite a bit of spread in the models. That said, the general picture indicates wind through the weekend. Have a fabulous week on the river!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users. DNR land in Eastern Washington (Buck Creek / Nestor Peak) is all closed to recreation due to fire danger.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Gunsight, Underhill. Siouxon has reopened. Huffman: not sure.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
