Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

If you’re hoping for a bunch of new snow for Mt. Hood, put your hope aside until the end of next weekend. Then cross your fingers for a moisture-saturated westerly atmospheric river that (maybe?) could pack a solid punch with cold enough temps. It’s way too far out for certainty. In the meantime, Temps this week will be cooler than last, and that should help take us back to corn snow from slush.

Monday starts mostly cloudy and stays that way during the day before turning clear overnight. Atmospheric instability could toss in showers or even a thunderstorm at any point in time or location today. It’s impossible to predict how much precip we”ll get, but it’ll be rain below 5000′ and could be snow above 6000′. A trace of rain or mixed precip is also forecast this evening as NW wind drives a little orographic precip. Wind: variable to 15 this morning, NW 15-20 this afternoon, and variable to 10 overnight.

Tuesday starts out clear up high and partly cloudy below 7000′. The day then turns totally clear and warmer with 5000′ temps nearing 40F. A weather system arrives overnight and sets us up for snow early Wednesday. The freezing level will be 6000′ in the morning, 8000′ in the evening, and 2000′ after midnight. Wind: variable to 10 in the morning, WSW 15-20 in the afternoon, and WNW 25 overnight.

A very uninspiring cold front swings through on Thursday. It will take temps much lower, but it wont’ drop much snow. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and the freezing level will be 500-1000′ near Mt. Hood overnight. Just 0.1” precip is forecast for the 24 hour period for 1” of new snow. Wind: WNW 35-40 in the morning, WNW 20-25 in the afternoon through the evening. Actually, looking at that wind, we could pick up a little extra. Let’s call it 1-2” new snow.

Thursday looks sunny with the freezing level around 2000′. Friday looks sunny, then partly cloudy, with the freezing level maxing out at 5500′. The next most interesting thing on the radar is the possibility of a stronger weather system later Sunday into Monday. We’ll keep a close eye on it. Have a great week on the slopes!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies of some sort are forecast all the way through this week. Not every day will be windy enough for wind sports, but you’ll have a chance. Monday should be windy enough, but we’re also under a somewhat unstable atmosphere and could have showers pop up at any time. To the point, as I was writing this, there was a thunderstorm in the Arlington area. So, given that caveat… gradients were 0.05 and 0.01 to starts. The wind builds to W 11-14 from Stevenson to Arlington during the morning. By early afternoon, we should have showers and very gusty 14-17 in the west with gusty 18-22 out east. As things stabilize later in the day, the wind picks up to gusty 18-22 from Stevenson to Arlington. River flow is 147kcfs, river temp is 44F, and high temp forecast is 65F.

Tuesday sees high pressure building inland. That starts the day with very light westerlies. Add a little afternoon warmth, and the wind will pick up to 12-15 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 7-10 east of there. High temp: 63F. A cold front pushes in on Wednesday. We’ll have a short period of strong westerlies overnight. The day starts with 11-14 in the west and 22-25 from The Dalles to Boardman. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 14-17 under mostly cloudy sky in the western Gorge with gusty 23-26 from The Dalles to Boardman. High temp: 54F. Enjoy!

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Partly cloudy sky adds additions clouds later and turns less cloudy overnight. Showers are possible at any time today. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and mid 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Tuesday starts partly cloudy and turns clear. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 60’s alter. Light westerlies early. Moderate westerlies later. No rainbows. Wednesday will be mostly cloudy with drizzle possible. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 50’s later. Moderate westerlies. 95% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

It’s brown pow season with perfect dirt. BUT NOT AT POST CANYON. I saw bikes covered in trails (mud) coming out of there Tuesday. If you ride when it’s muddy, you’ll do permanent damage. Stop it! There’s plenty of time to ride Post this spring and summer and next fall. Ride Syncline or somewhere else! Cows are going in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your do on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Dirty Fingers hosts the “Best of Mountain Sports” Film Festival on March 26th at 7pm.

At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm.The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site.
