Monday: a good week for all the sports…

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s Monday morning, and we’re back to rain on the mountain after a secret and unexpected fresh snow afternoon on Sunday. Rain continues through Monday evening. Snow follows and continues all the way through Friday morning. Looks like we’ll have some lovely fresh tracks this week!

But first, we gotta get through Monday. The snow level will be 6000′ through the day, 5000′ after 5pm, and 3500′ after midnight. About 0.7” rain falls during the day. Another 0.4” water value (WV) falls as snow after 5pm, for 3-5” of fresh. Northwest wind overnight will help drive snow accumulation. Wind: WSW 30 in the morning, WSW 20 in the afternoon, WNW 20 in the evening, and NW 30 overnight.

Tuesday looks snowy, windy, and colder. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ overnight. NW wind will drive orographic snowfall for the period, perhaps even continuing after midnight. Daytime snow: 0.3” WV, for 3” of regular Cascade snow. Overnight: 0.2” WV, for 2-3” of more dry snow. Wind: NW 30-35 all day.

Wednesday sees the NW flow continue for additional light snow accumulation. A system moves in on Wednesday night with a deeper moisture tap. Combine that with the NW flow for heavy snowfall. The snow level Wednesday will be 2000′ in the morning, slowly rising to 3500′ after midnight. Daytime precip: 0.2” WV, for 2” new. Overnight: 0.9” WV, for 9-10” of new. Models disagree on this – the GFS is more aggressive than the Euro, but this still seems possible. Wind: NW 20 until 2pm or so, then WNW 35.

Thursday looks very snowy as orographic effects combine with lots of available moisture for a day of endless fresh tracks. The snow level will be 3500′ all day and 4000′ after midnight. Precip: 1.2” WV during the day, for a foot of new snow… regular old Cascade snow. Not particular fluffy. Just a lot of it. Another 0.6” WV falls overnight, for 5-6” more. Models do disagree on exact snow amounts. The Euro has about half what the GFS predicts (GFS numbers above), but it’ll still be plenty of freshies all day. Wind: WNW 35ish all day becoming NW 20 overnight. Friday currently looks sunny. Saturday looks rainy and then snowy.

Gorge Wind

Looks like the official opening day of windsports season is happening on Tuesday. If you miss it, Wednesday is an option too. We’ll have another day of moderate to strong (but gusty) westerlies on Thursday.

Weak low pressure sits off the coast on Monday and slowly moves into western Washington by this afternoon. Result: light and variable wind for most of the day. As the low moves inland today, we’ll see the wind switch to westerly, probably climbing to 12-15 from Stevenson to Arlington after 2pm. River flow is 201kcfs and temp is 47 degrees. Offshore high pressure intensifies tonight, setting up a windy start to Tuesday.

Strong (1038mb+) high pressure offshore combines with that exiting low and strong NW flow for 25-29 from Stevenson to Arlington right off the bat on Tuesday. Showers stick around west of Viento and possibly east of Threemile all day. That narrows your options just a tiny bit. As the day goes on, the wind picks up to 30-35, strongest from Mosier to Rufus. Hood River is questionable due to the possibility of clouds and rain. Arlington should have no problem making it to 29-32. A front moving in from the NW, well offshore, could decrease wind quality mid-to late afternoon. Or maybe it won’t. High temps Tuesday: low 50’s near Hood River, low 60’s near Arlington.

Wednesday looks rainy in the western Gorge, possibly to Hood River. That shifts the strongest wind a bit more east. Flow will be westerly as high pressure offshore weakens and drops south. Clouds and rain accompany the wind west of Hood River, for gusty 15-20. East of the clouds: 26-30 all day. Strongest, steadiest wind will be Mosier to Arlington, best after 1pm. Thursday: 10-13 to start and gusty 25-29 in the afternoon, only in the eastern Gorge. How’s that for an opening week?

Road and Mountain Biking

ATTENTION: the cows are out on Hospital Hill, and people have still been taking dogs on their hikes and bikes. STOP! I received an email from the Kreps asking me to remind folks that dogs are not allowed on Hospital Hill between March 20th and July 1st. Cows or no cows, dogs are not allowed. We use that land due to the generosity of the Kreps family. When you go against their wishes, 1) you’re being a selfish butthead and 2) you endanger access for others. Please, leave your dogs at home! Other news: snow-free trails include Post from Mitchell Ridge down, Whoopdee (too muddy), and Syncline. All trails will be too wet to ride starting today – if you ride muddy trails, you’ll damage them. Let them dry out, and trail volunteers can build new trails rather than fixing damage you caused. Thank you!
