Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! As you can see by looking at the sky (it’s cloudy), we have some “stuff” going on in the weather today. This will impact the wind quality and predictability. Uncertainty continues through tomorrow. That said, we should get some time on the river. Get it now, because the wind starts to fade on Wednesday and turns easterly on Thursday. Models are rather unclear about the weekend. We do have a chance of teen-strength westerlies on Saturday and somewhat stronger wind on Sunday, but it all depends on the timing of the breakdown an incoming hot ridge. So, don’t make plans yet!

Looking at today, Monday, we have morning pressures of 30.07/29.98/29.95 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.03. A weak weather system is approaching, but it will fall apart, hopefully limiting disruptions on the river. Thermal gradients this afternoon combine with weak support in the offshore waters. We like that. Conditions will probably be best in the post-frontal set up this afternoon. For the morning, you’ll find gusty 15-18 from Viento to Swell with light wind at Stevenson and 10-13ish from Hood River to Arlington. Westerlies should pick up to gusty 19-22 from Viento to Mosier this morning and hold in the 10-13 range to the east. Stevenson will take extra long today thanks to cloud coverage. In the afternoon, we should see westerlies build to 20-23 at Stevenson and 24-27 from Viento to Doug’s. Wait until the evening, and you’ll have 24-27 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Thanks, thermals! River flow yesterday was 56-92kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 76F.

Ensembles like the idea of more consistent wind tomorrow (Tuesday), but the deterministic GFS isn’t as hopeful. Either way, it’ll be plenty windy for you, so ignore the conflicting information! The day starts with a nice marine layer in Cascade Locks and is reinforced by a weak system in the afternoon. Morning wind will be 14-17 from Stevenson to Arlington. Late morning sees the wind rise to 20-23 from Mosier to Doug’s with 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River, 14-17 near Rufus, and 11-14 near Arlington. Afternoon wind holds in the teens west of Mosier and rises to 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus with teens or less at Arlington. The wind drops off rapidly after 5pm. High temp: 75F.

Wednesday starts with marine clouds, but those quickly burn off. A weak system impacts the Gorge with some high clouds in the afternoon. Early wind will be 10-13 from Viento to Swell. We should see the wind rise to 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River. East: nothing. High temp: 77F.

Thursday and Friday bring easterlies in the 20-25 range. Saturday: easterly then westerly, perhaps. Sunday: possibly westerly, but really depends on what the ridge and heat do. Your job is to convince the heat low to shift east of the Cascades. Models hint at next Tuesday being the cooldown day, but there’s a LOT of uncertainty still about timing. That’s over a week out, right? Have a great day on the river today!

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
