Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Monday morning, and all the Wind Johnnies are sore this morning. That’s because everyone was at Arlington yesterday hanging on to their small gear and riding big swell. There’s no sign of another giant day in the extended forecast, but there will be 2/3 days with moderate to strong westerlies. Expect to drive. The western Gorge is set up for clouds and sprinkles Monday and Tuesday.

Our setup Monday morning includes a low pressure trough off the coast of Washington and high pressure off the California Coast. Inland low pressure completes this picture. Go outside and look up, and you’ll find clouds far past the Cascade Crest. Westerlies respond accordingly. You’ll find 15-18 most places to start the day with low 20’s east of Rufus. That’s our picture for the day: head east of The Dalles for the best results. You may even have to head east of Rufus. Midday wind picks up to 24-27 east of The Dalles for a few hours and then drops back to 20-23 in the afternoon. The western Gorge ends up rainy with 5-10 at Stevenson all day and 7-11 from Viento to The Dalles. River flow is 177kcfs. River temp is 55F. High temp forecast for Hood River is 62F.

Another round of western Gorge showers starts Tuesday. That’s followed by sprinkles and a wee bit of atmospheric instability. Offshore high pressure reasserts itself in the afternoon and combines with an inland low pressure trough for another round of west wind. The day starts light. Less than 5mph. By late morning, the wind builds to 20-23 from Stevenson to Rufus. Give the desert a few more hours to warm, and you’ll find 24-28 from Mosier to Arlington with gusty 19-23 to the west of Mosier. High temp: 64F.

High pressure slides over the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday like an oil slick spreading in a pond. While there will be some wind in the morning, there likely won’t be any in the afternoon. Max westerlies: 11-14 in the morning east of Rufus. Wednesday also marks the one-day return of sunshine; high temps max out in the mid 70’s. Thursday could turn into quite the rainy day. If you drive way out into the desert (to Arlington, perhaps), you’ll find evening wind in the mid-upper 20’s. If the extended forecast is correct, we’re likely to see a stronger west wind day on Friday followed by light wind and hot weather for the holiday weekend.
