Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when the mountains and beaches are closed? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider subscribing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to subscribe? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Gorge Wind Forecast
Here is the latest update on launch sites. All land managers are encouraging people to not travel to access recreation, and all are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. Recreate and go home. That’ll both help limit the spread of SARS-COV-2 and will increase parking availability.
Washington and Oregon State Parks in the Gorge will likely remain closed until the end of May (Rowena, Doug’s, Hatchery, Viento). Swell City is closed. The Hook is open for windsurfing and SUP. No kiting allowed from the Hook. The Spit and Marina are open. The Event Site is closed. Army Corps has reopened Avery and Roosevelt but NOT The Wall or Rufus. Mosier is only open for residents of Mosier. Stevenson launches are closed. Arlington is open.
Generally speaking, low pressure will circulate offshore all week long. Some of you know this as the dreaded “upper level low”, a baddie that decreases wind strength and quality. In this particular case, the ULL also puts the Gorge at risk for clouds and showers. This doesn’t mean zero wind. It does mean inconsistent wind with one possible exception: this afternoon.
Monday starts out calm. As this low moves closer, the wind turns easterly at 10-15 most locations in the Gorge. Exception: Hood River to Rowena, with 5-10 or less. After 2pm or so, cooler air (hopefully) starts to push into the metro area. If, and this is a big if, thunderstorms don’t fire up, we’re very likely to see about two hours of very strong, 28-32+ westerlies from Stevenson to Moiser. The wind then shifts eastward (again, assuming no thunderstorms, which is a very big assumption), and rises to 30-35 for a couple hours from Rowena (closed) to Avery (open), Rufus (closed, wrong direction anyway), and Roosevelt (open). River flow is 267kcfs and temp is 53 degrees.
That ULL settles in offshore on Tuesday keeping a good shot at thunderstorms going, especially in the morning. Clouds and showers are likely all across the land, and high temp will be down about 10 degrees. While this would normally be a good sign, we’ll reap the benefits Monday afternoon and overnight, rather than Tuesday. Wind: light westerly early, then light and variable, then gusty 18-23 from Stevenson to Arlington after 2pm.
We continue with the showers and instability on Wednesday. Light westerlies in the morning slowly build to gusty 17-20 from Mosier to Biggs with 7-10 in other locations. Repeat that on Thursday. Rain and thundershower chances continue all week long as muggy air and southerly or southwest flow remain around the region.
Jones, Sauvie’s, and Coast forecast are on break to discourage travel.
Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Kate Brown has announced that ski areas will be able to open soon. Timberline states that they are excitedly awaiting her plan so they can reopen. The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. For now, and neither in-bounds nor out-of-bounds snowsports are available to you. Some of you will be tempted to go out backcountry skiing. Please don’t – accidents do happen, and you may put others at risk. Timberline, Skibowl, and Meadows are all closed to uphill traffic at this time.Hood River Weather Forecast
Scattered high clouds this morning give way to a chance of thunder this afternoon and evening with showers. Temps will be near 50 early and in the mid 70’s later. Light wind most of the day. Strong westerlies later. 10% chance of rainbows. Hail not likely. Tuesday continues with the clouds and thunderstorm potential along with plenty of showers. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and mid 60’s later. Light westerlies. 15% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks showery with possible thunder. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 60’s later. Light west wind early. Moderate westerlies. 25% chance of rainbows. Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Trails and roads on Hood River County land (Post Canyon, Pine Mont), have opened for residents of Hood River County ONLY. Staging and parking areas will remain closed – you will have to ride to the trailhead. USFS lands (Syncline, 44 Road Trails) remain closed. State Parks (Columbia Hills) are closed.
Kreps and SDS lands have reopened. Most DNR lands (including Buck Creek, Nestor Peak, and I believe Cold Creek) have reopened. BLM trails in Oregon (Sandy Ridge) appear to be open. Please do not travel outside your own community to access trails at this time – the official recommendation is to travel no more than 50 miles from home. Please maintain social distancing and do not recreate (shuttle, carpool) with people from outside your household.
Large groups of riders have been observed violating social distancing guidelines while riding to and from Post Canyon. People, your actions could result in the trails shutting back down. Not cool. Other people: if you see people doing this, please say something to them. It’s important that we work as a community on this rather than avoiding conflict and remaining silent. People are most likely to hear the message if it’s delivered to them personally, rather than over social media.
