Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Sunday, and the day will live up to its name: we should see sunshine all day long. The free air freezing level today will be less than 500′ (in the Gorge, cuz that’s where I’m based) with temps on the mountain in the teens. Expect light wind all day long. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Monday starts off clear and sunny with low cloudy. High clouds move in late in the morning, and snow starts up around 4pm. Heavy snow falls all night. The snow level Monday will be less than 1000′ all day, dropping to the surface (in the Gorge, ‘cuz that’s where I’m based) in the evening and jumping to 5000-5500’ overnight. We’ll see 1.2” water value (WV) between 4pm Monday and 4am Tuesday. Given the fluctuating snow level, we’re probably going to see 10-12” of relatively heavy snow overnight. It’s also going to be super windy on Monday night, and that will affect snow quality; expect light wind Monday morning, rising to SW 20 in the afternoon and W 55 after midnight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Tuesday starts off with heavy snowfall and strong wind. The snow level will be 5000” before sunrise, dropping to 1500′ by mid-morning and 1000′ overnight. We’ll see around .9” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 8-11” of fluffy snow. That’ll be followed by another .4” WV Tuesday night, for 5-6” of very fluffy snow. Wind on Tuesday will be W 55 early, dropping to W 40 after sunrise and holding all the way through Wednesday morning. Although that W 55 wind will impact snow quality early, W 40 is probably just right for decent snow quality and endless fresh track refills.

Wednesday currently looks partly cloudy with flurries early, cloudy midday, and cloudy overnight. The snow level will be between 1000′ and 1500′ all day. No accumulation. Wind on Wednesday will be W 40 early, dropping to SW 10 by the afternoon and picking up just a touch to SW 15 overnight. Models are in disagreement past Wednesday, and I’ll be on vacation from Thursday on through the following Tuesday.

Random Morning Thoughts

For many people, today is a day of gift-giving. In the midst of giving things to each other, we often lose sight of the underlying meaning. We give gifts because we care about people. We give gifts because we want to show the other person that we have feelings for them.

It’s easier to give a material present than to say what’s really on our mind. Expressing our love for others can be scary. We can feel vulnerable. We can feel like we’re breaking unspoken societal rules to not speak from our hearts – after all, receiving spoken love and gratitude is embarrassing for many of us.

I say “fuck that”. On this holiday morning, take a risk and speak the words that lie behind your gift-giving. Let your friends and family know how much you care, and let them know what it is about them that makes you care.

I wish all of you a very happy holiday. By reading this forecast, whether you donate or not, you’re letting me know that I’m making an impact in the lives of others. Thank you all for adding meaning to my life. That means the world to me. I wish you the best. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I stepped outside, and it was cold and cloudy. The Nothing is here, and if you’d like to escape it, you can go up in elevation for sunshine. Expect a cloudy morning and partly cloudy afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and mid 30’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows. Monday looks like Nothing to start with snow after sunset, possibly switching to rain before sunrise Tuesday, and possibly waiting a few hours. Temps will be in the mid 20’s Monday morning and mid 30’s in the afternoon, dropping back below freezing overnight. Light east wind. No rainbows.

Tuesday morning starts out with snow, then freezing rain, then rain. Temps will be just below freezing early and in the low 40’s in the afternoon. The switch to above-freezing will happen between 4am and 10am. My best guess is 8:42, but that’s just a guess. Before the switch, Hood River will receive 2-4” of snow. Light east wind early, moderate west wind later. 98% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

You’ll find some dry pavement out there, I’m sure. Just be prepared for icy spots. Dirty Fingers has a group cyclocross ride at 3pm today. Remember, it was below freezing last night, and it will be above freezing today. That means you’ll do major damage if you ride the delicate freeze-thaw at Syncline. So don’t, okay?

Upcoming Events

I have no idea which events are on and off today, it being Christmas, so here’s the usual list: Yoga at Samadhi at 9am, ping pong at the Armory at 10am, meditation at Flow at 11am, pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm, YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4pm, and restorative yoga at Pure Yoga in Hood River at 6pm.

Have an awesome day today!
