Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Tuesday as I write this, and you’ll be able to take advantage of easterlies and westerlies today. Until late morning, we’ll have easterlies at 20-25 from Rooster to Viento. The wind will die off and go to W 19-22 between Stevenson and Mosier by 2pm and then 24-27 between Stevenson and Arlington later, with the sweet spot likely between Rowena and Avery. River temp is 56 degrees. Air temp will be around 60.

Wednesday looks rainy in the western Gorge all day. In the rainy regions, the wind will be gusty 19-24 in the morning and 12-15 in the afternoon. Areas in the sun see stronger westerlies on Wednesday: 25-29 in the morning and 22-26 in the afternoon. Strongest wind will be from Mosier to Rufus in the morning and east of The Dalles in the afternoon.

Thursday currently looks light and variable near Hood River all day as rain falls in much of the Gorge. Locations west of Viento and east of The Dalles will see westerlies at 12-15 Thursday afternoon. Friday looks light and variable.

Random Morning Thoughts

Many of you have guessed that I’m a big fan of meditation. Sitting for a bit each day has revolutionized how I relate to myself and my thoughts and emotions. It’s a long, slow process, but it’s also a process that leads to lasting change. And… it’s a process that develops the patience to think in terms of slow, steady change, rather than instant gratification. That’s one of the things I’ve found so amazing about meditation – increased tolerance for time. Anyway, I say all this because there’s a senior teacher in the Thai Forest Tradition leading the meditation at Yoga Samadhi tonight. While that is a Buddhist tradition, it’s one that focuses on meditation. If you have a meditation practice or are interested in developing one, swing by this evening (Tuesday) for the free meditation and talk starting at 6:30.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but could be if you have Apple Health or can cash pay and come to Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Well, it’s Tuesday, and the snow amounts for Thursday have certainly backed off from Monday’s forecast. That does happen this time of year, and is one of the reasons we forecaster types are loathe to do long-range forecasts! Tuesday will be a sunny day on the hill. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be at or above 12,500′ all day. Temps at 5000′ will be in the mid 40’s this morning with NE wind at 15. In the afternoon, temps at 5000′ will rise to 50 with NW wind at 35.

Wednesday looks rainy on the mountain during the day and snowy in the evening. The snow level early will be around 12,000′ with NW wind at 50mph (that will impact life operations at T-Line). After 5pm, the snow level will drop to 3500′ or so. 3” new snow overnight. West wind at 35.

Thrusday looks snowy all day. The snow level will be around 3000′ in the morning and 4000′ in the evening. Wind will be NW 30 in the morning and WSW 40 in the evening. We’ll see about 7” of new snow (actually, given the wind, we could see 7-11”) in the 24 hour period. Friday looks mostly cloudy with flurries. The snow level will be 2000′ and the wind will be WSW 30.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s Tuesday, and it shall be a clear and sunny day today. Temps will be right around 30 early and near 60 in the afternoon. East wind early. West wind later. No rainbows. Wednesday looks mostly cloudy. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks cloudy and rainy. Temps will be near 40 early and in the low 50’s’ in the afternoon. Light wind. 18% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Dirt! Dirt! Dirt! Get the good dirt while it’s good! Post, Whoopdee, Hospital, Nestor and Underwood are all great. There are 6 trees down on Dog River and a LOT of trees down on trails south of the 44 Road. I don’t have all the specifics, but I do know that Cook Meadows and High Prairie are basically unrideable at this time.

Upcoming Events

There are just a couple more days of Gorge Happiness Month. As you think about your three gratitudes this morning, tell someone about one of them. That’ll make you happier!

Coming up today, there’s meditation at noon at Trinity Natural Medicine. There’s $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30. This evening at 6pm, there’s community yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon. At 6:30, there’s community yoga at the Mt. Hood Town Hall and community Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell. There’s YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) in The Dalles at 6:45pm. There’s community meditation at Bethel Congregational Church in White Salmon – Bingen at 7pm. On Tuesday night at 6:30, it’s the usual meditation with the monks from Pacific Hermitage at Yoga Samadhi. But this Tuesday is extra-special: Ajahn Geoff, a senior teacher in the tradition, will be leading the meditation and giving the talk. I highly recommend being there!

Have an awesome day today!
