Friday/Saturday forecast. Summer! Wind! Dirt! Flowers!

It’s another beautiful, sunny early spring day up on Mt. Hood, and the sun’s not going anywhere today! As a matter of fact, the sun isn’t going anywhere this weekend. You can expect sunshine all day today, Friday. The free air freezing level will be 12,000′ all day, and 5000′ temps will top out near…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Saturday also looks sunny all day long. Mt. Hood Meadows has Mazofest and the Ski to Defeat ALS on Saturday. No matter where you go on the mountain, it’ll be warm: the free air freezing level will be 12,000′ all day long, with 5000′ temps maxing out around 50 degrees. Wind on Saturday will be NW 10-15.

Sunday will start off sunny. It’s entirely possible that some high clouds will move in during the afternoon. It’s also possible that the high clouds will stay to the south of Mt. Hood. Either way, Sunday is Skibowl’s last day of lift-serve skiing this season, and lift tickets will be free that day. Tubing won’t be free, but you can shred the Bowl for free Sunday. The free air freezing level will be 11,000′ on Sunday, and 5000′ temps will max out around 50 degrees. Sunday’s wind will be NW 5 all day long.

Monday also looks quite warm, but will likely have the addition of thin high clouds. The free air freezing level will be 11,000′ on Monday, with 5000′ temps maxing out around 50 degrees. Wind on Monday will be W 5 early and SW 10 in the afternoon. Next chance for precip is late Tuesday, and that precip will come in as rain, not snow, protecting the granular snowpack from becoming sticky. Nice positive reframe, right? =)

Gorge Wind Forecast

I’m feeling slightly better about spending the whole weekend in a classroom in Portland, as the wind forecast has backed off some from the predictions of the last couple of days. Still, it’s going to be windy enough to get on the water, and with the river temp at 49 degrees, those of you who are waiting to achieve the magical 50-50 air-water combo are almost there! Expect east wind at 15-20 at Rooster and 7-11 at Stevenson this morning, lasting through noon or so. The wind will turn light and variable this afternoon, perhaps picking up to W 5-10 from Stevenson to Hood River before dark, but I wouldn’t count on it. You can count on the wind picking up overnight.

Saturday starts off with a solid marine push and strong high pressure off the coast. Models now suggest the high pressure will weaken during the day, meaning the strongest wind will probably be for Dawn Patrol. With a temp of 52 degrees predicted for Saturday morning, that might just be doable! You can expect 23-27 from Viento to the Hatchery right off the bat at sunrise. The wind may fade a little to 20-23 midday, but should pick back up to 22-25 from Rowena to Maryhill in the afternoon. I’m trying to figure out if I can sneak in 45 minutes of windsurfing and still make it to a 9am training in Portland… hmmm… does it get light early enough or not? =)

Looking ahead to Sunday, we’ll see 15-18, maybe a touch less, from Hood River to Arlington first thing in the morning. It looks like the wind will pick up to 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s Beach in the afternoon. The eastern Gorge wind will not stick around all day, so it’s probably not worth the drive.

Much as the forecast for tomorrow has backed off a bit, the forecast for Monday is backing off. As of this morning, it looks like W 23-26 on Monday. Lighter wind returns Tuesday and Wednesday, a good setup for me to ride my bike to school on Tuesday. Ha!

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m sitting here this morning looking out my window feeling incredibly blessed and lucky. I have a training in Portland this afternoon, but my big dilemma this morning is whether to ride my mountain bike on perfect dirt or ride my road bike in the blossoming Hood River Valley. I could even ride my bike to my training in Portland if I wanted to! And while I’m debating this, I’m staring out my window at a view of the Gorge and Mt. Hood and listening to cars on the freeway.

There’s something about those cars… The Earth has been around for 4 billion years, and each of us was lucky enough to be born into a short window of time when cars are cheap enough that most Americans can afford them. Fossil fuels are available enough that we can drive as much as we want. In other words, we have unprecedented freedom of movement, and that gives us unprecedented access to do the things we love (ride bikes, windsurf, kite, standup paddle, etc.).

Coupled with our good fortune comes great responsibility: without long-term planning, innovation, and conservation, the freedom we enjoy won’t be available to those born outside this lucky window. We’re blessed to have been born when we were. It’s our duty to make sure those who follow us have the same blessings. There are many ways to help protect our planet and our future. You don’t have to make huge changes or take on the entire burden yourself, but paying it forward in return for your blessed life is something to consider. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

Looks like we didn’t quite set a temperature record here in the Gorge yesterday, but we have a better shot today. The forecast high is 85 degrees, and the record high is 84 degrees. Also worth noting is the soil temp in my garden: 63 degrees right now. That’s usually the soil temp in June, not in April, and I’ve planted a couple of tomatoes, just for the heck of it. Anyway, expect a sunny day today. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind.

Saturday looks sunny and windy. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Strong west wind. Sunday looks sunny. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. Next chance of rain is Tuesday evening.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s so much good dirt out there right now that you’d be nuts to not get on a bike today! Remember, please, the following: no dogs are allowed on Hospital Hill. Mobius trail in Post Canyon is currently closed for repairs. There’s a trail work party in Post Canyon at 9am on Sunday. In road biking news, why wouldn’t you today? We’re looking at light wind all day long with a high temp of 85 degrees. The balsamroot is blooming in Mosier and The Dalles, and the Hood River Valley is blooming too. My god. This is a gorgeous place, isn’t it?

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday, and there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run every Friday at 7am. Jog 4.1 miles and get a free cup of coffee and a donut. This afternoon at 4:30pm, there’s community Hatha Yoga at the Heartgate Sanctuary in Oak Grove. Looking ahead to the weekend, there’s a group trail run at 8am in Post Canyon. Meet at the bottom of Post Canyon Road for that one. The HRATS have a trail work party at 9am at Family Man on Sunday. Sunday is Ski Free day at Skibowl – last day of the season there.

Have an awesome day today!
