Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Three days of strong westerlies are on tap, just in time for three big events. Today is the Gorge Downwind Champs race from Stevenson to Hood River. Expect 800 (yes, 800!) boats headed through. Please give them the right of way. Also today: the Laser and Aero Gorge Blowout from Cascade Locks to Hood River. That’s about 30 little sailboats piloted by very intrepid people. Give them the right of way too, please. The Bridge of the Gods Kitefest runs all weekend at Stevenson. Their Blowout is on Sunday – all watercraft are welcome. Guess what else happens on Sunday? A bass fishing tournament in Stevenson!

Let’s look at Friday. Clouds never made it into the metro area; they’re hanging out west of the West Hills. So Portland and the Gorge start off similar, and temps will equalize. However, the bigger picture shows temps reaching 95 at Hermiston, fueling a big temp gradient this afternoon. So. Morning westerlies will be 19-22ish from Viento to Hood River with 12-15 Mosier to Arlington and 5-10 at Stevenson. By mid-morning, the wind rises to 24-27 from Viento to Mosier with 16-20 at Stevenson and 15-18 from Lyle to Arlington. Models suggest widespread gusty 21-25 this afternoon between Stevenson and Rufus as the offshore front impacts quality here in the Gorge. In the evening, Mosier to Doug’s, perhaps Rufus too, rises to gusty 24-27. Arlington: 20-23. River flow is FINALLY below 200kcfs! Very exciting for downwind paddlers. Today’s readings are 164-190kcfs. River temp: 64F. High temp: 84F.

That front should clear the area on Saturday. An approaching trough will shove some marine clouds into the west side. Stevenson and perhaps Hood River start at least partly cloudy. You know what that means: wind! We start the day with just 10-13, but it’ll be all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Midday: 19-22 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 at Stevenson (perhaps still cloudy) and Rufus (not cloudy at all!). From then on, the heat works magic; afternoon westerlies rise to 24-27 from Mosier to Doug’s with 22-25 from Stevenson to Hood River and also at Rufus. Given the setup, reality could be the forecast. Fingers crossed! High temp: 82F.

Sunday looks like this: CLASSIC GORGE SETUP! Current Dawn Patrol forecast is 24-27 from Viento to Mosier with 15-18 to the east and 10-13 at tricky-to-predict (but cloudy) Stevenson. Midday: 26-30 from Viento to Avery with 20-25 at Stevenson and 23-26 from Rufus to Arlington. Afternoon: 28-32 from [not sure yet] to Arlington with 24-27 at Threemile. Once the clouds burn off at Stevenson, the bass fishing tournament there will be dealing with at least 20-25mph. Sunday is the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout as well – ALL downwind objects are welcome! Should be epic. High temp: 79F.

Monday: hotter and less windy. You’ll probably be so sore and tired by that point that you’ll be okay with that!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Gorge Downwind Champs run 7/11-7/16 and are staged out of the Skamania County Fairgrounds. The Laser Gorge Blowout is scheduled Friday. Bridge of the Gods Kitefest and the (all windsport) Blowout is scheduled Friday-Sunday. The Race Across Oregon starts Friday. The Wind Regatta runs Saturday and Sunday in Cascade Locks. There’s a bass fishing tournament Sunday in Stevenson.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain may still have some blowdown. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: full of ticks and poison oak. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
