Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Those of you jonesing for a rest day will be happy to know that one is coming. Sunday. You only have to make it to Sunday! I might be talking to myself here. Maybe. Anyway, we’ll have moderately strong west wind in the desert today and Saturday. A trough (cool, somewhat unstable) settles in on Sunday and shuts things down for a day. This is the day to teach your friends to ride foil behind a boat or jetski!
Friday opens with pressures of 30.19/30.07/30.00 for gradients of 0.12 and 0.07. Models suggest those will lessen during the day and rebound in the afternoon. Expect 25-28 from Avery to Arlington this morning, 22-25 midday, and 25-28 this afternoon. Dawn Patrol from Viento to the Hatch will be the best wind of the day there: 21-24. The wind then drops to 12-15 from Stevenson to Doug’s and holds through early afternoon. Lyle to Doug’s rebounds to 22-25 this afternoon, and Stevenson to Mosier jumps to 17-20. River flow over the last 24 hours was 179-279kcfs (199-279 at Rufus), river temp is 61.88F, and high temp forecast is 70F.
Saturday sees a weak disturbance in the Force. Instability accompanies this all the way from the metro area to the desert. West of The Dalles, the day starts with W 7-10 and drizzle. From Avery to Boardman, the day starts dry with 22-25mph westerlies. Moderate offshore high pressure combines with minimal desert heating for a nudge upwards in the afternoon: 14-17 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 26-29 from Avery to Arlington. Given the instability, the wind is likely to be gusty. It could also be disrupted by random showers and/or thundershowers. High temp: 61F. Cold!
A trough moves overhead and shuts things down on Sunday. I wrote, “Calm! Calm!” in my notes. We’ll see if that holds. But for now, it’s a rest day. High temp: 64F
Extended: Offshore high pressure appears to rebound on Monday and bring back the wind. Towards the middle of next week, ridging builds. It’s unclear how hot it will get or where the hottest heat will be. That makes it impossible to forecast. Yet. Have a great day on the river today!

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. On June 25th, Brave Endeavors hosts a pride MTB ride at Post Canyon at 5:30pm. June 30th is Vortex #3, a paddling race.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon.

Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Eightmile, Knebal, Bottle Prairie, Surveyor’s, Dog River, Sueprconnector, and Cook Meadows are open. Fifteenmile is clear of snow but has not been cleared of downed trees. Lewis River is open. Lower Falls Creek is open, but the area above Horse Camp is not. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral.
