Friday. Yet another awesome day in the Gorge. More wind for the weekend!

Although we’re still seeing light wind today, and it’s another great day for the fisherman at the mouth of the White Salmon, the light wind is due to a .09 east gradient; it’s blowing 15-18 at Stevenson and Rooster this morning. You can expect that to pick up to 22-25 or so by mid-morning, holding…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

If you need fish, Wild Columbia Salmon at Windance is offering daily specials if you purchase 20+ pounds, and they’re happy to package it up for you in a variety of ways. In addition, if you go in the evening, there’s a good chance they’ll hand you some warm smoked salmon to eat. That happened to me yesterday. Yum. So delicious.

Back to the wind forecast… Expect light westerlies tomorrow morning. As an upper level low moves into southern Oregon mid-afternoon, the wind will climb to 24-28 from Stevenson to Rufus. Best bets: Stevenson and Doug’s, as usual when there are dynamics involved. If the models are correct, Arlington will only see 15-18 before dusk tomorrow.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I started thinking about the random morning thoughts this morning, and then I got distracted. It was something along the lines of contemplation and reflection and how important those things are, and then I started reading about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The Jewish High Holidays are a time for reflection on the past year and for contemplating how to make the next year more harmonious.

If you’re interested in doing some reflection, the 10Q website will send you one question a day. You’ll answer the 10 questions, they’ll be locked away in a magical vault, and your answers will be sent back to you next year a couple days before Rosh Hashanah. If I remember correctly from last year, the questions are not religious. They are merely about your experience and your hopes and dreams.

Why bother contemplating your experience? You’re busy enough, right? Well, contemplation may bring you the clarity to create more space in your life. More serenity. More happiness. More connection with others. Or it might just feel like a waste of time, in which case, you don’t have to do it again.

But try it this year. Do the 10Q (it’s free) and see what you can learn about yourself. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s sunny and cool out there this morning with a bit of smoke in the air. If you’re thinking ahead, you’ll have all your windows and doors open to save that cool air for this afternoon. Expect temps in the low 50’s early and the mid 90’s this afternoon. Light wind. Tomorrow starts off with temps in the upper 50’s and climbs to the low 90’s. Light wind early, strong late. Sunday cools off a bit: temps near 60 early and right around 80 in the afternoon. Strong wind. Next chance of rainbows is Monday, when we’ll see sprinkles with the snow level down around 5500-6000′. Looking ahead to Wednesday, a winter-strength storm system slams into Vancouver Island, soaking us with rain. The snow level with that one will initially be around 6000′, but will rise to 8000’+ with the rain.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a jog yesterday on the Dry Creek Trail over by Falls Creek, and the dirt was perfect. I suspect Falls Creek and Lewis River are also in pretty good shape. That might be a place to look for non-dusty trails. Or have patience: after next Wednesday, we’ll have tacky trails everywhere, once again! In road biking news, today is your day with an easterly gradient keeping light wind in the central Gorge. Tomorrow will start off light, but tomorrow afternoon through Monday look awfully windy for pleasant road biking.

Northwave’s Locals’ Week Deals

It’s been a long and busy summer here in the Gorge, and Northwave would like to welcome you to Local’s Week! Live here? Your playground belongs to you again now that the kids are back in school, the teachers have returned to work, and the White Sprinter Vans are starting to hibernate for the winter. To celebrate, Northwave is offering sales on sails AND 15% off all sail repairs for all brands of sails. My favorite: the new window. If your window is cloudy, and you can’t see through it any more, get a new one. Not only will you be able to better see the other sailors, kiters, SUPers, and surfskis around you, you’ll also have a better view of the unicorns, rainbows, and Gorge scenery. Trust me on this one – it’s about $50 for a new window and worth every penny.

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday, and as always, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run at 7am, getting you a free coffee and donut for running 4 miles. Tonight’s the Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association’s end-of-season party at the Butler Bank in Hood River, and there’s a campfire song circle at Vista Park at 7 tonight.

Coming up tomorrow, Hood River County has a work party on a new section of the 170 trail, also known as Dirtsurfer. Meet at Binns Hill staging area at 9am to help out. The Aluminum Man triathlon is in The Dalles tomorrow, and there’s a cleanup on the headwaters of the Salmon River at Timberline. There’s a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am tomorrow, and there’s a half-day meditation (free of cost to free your mind) at Yoga Samadhi from 1pm to 5pm. Sunday’s the Rural Rampage adventure bike race in Hood River. The Fly-in at WAAAM is both days this weekend.

And of course, next weekend is the Gorge Kids Triathlon and Music Festival of the Gorge in Hood River – they’re looking for volunteers if you’ve got time to give.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
