Friday. Would you like some snow and ice at your house? Okay!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s time for my annual birthday card request. We all need love and attention, but our society socializes us to be ashamed to ask for these things. I’ve formed a compromise that works well for me. Once a year I explicitly ask for love and attention in the form of birthday cards. If you feel so moved, please drop me a card telling me why you love me and/or how the work I do makes your world better. Your kindness will sustain me over the next year. My address is PO Box 841 in Hood River, 97031. Happy New Year, and thanks for the love!

Now, your forecast. The Mt. Hood snow forecast almost seems easy compared to the metro area and valley forecast today! Expect a sunny day today on Mt. Hood with temps maxing out in the mid 20’s. The free air freezing level will be at your house all day. Wind will be W 10-15 early, becoming SW 10 overnight. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Saturday starts off cloudy. Snow starts up around 9am, continuing through midnight, after which we may see a switch to wet snow or a snow/sleet mix. The snow level will be at your house early and at 5500′ after midnight (but still at your house due to the inversion). We’ll see .5” water value (WV) between 9am and 4pm, for 4-6” of dense snow. We’ll see another .2” of snow/sleet mix overnight. Wind will be S 10 early, rising to SW 20 in the afternoon and evening.

Sunday is a tricky call, as the snow level will fluctuate. It’ll be at the surface early, with temps right at freezing from 5500′ down. By 1pm, the snow level will rise to 6000-6500′, with rain falling on the hill, After 4pm, the snow level will gradually fall to 2000′ by Monday morning. Between 4am and 4pm Sunday, we’ll see 1.5-2” WV, some of which will fall as wet snow, but most of which will fall as rain. Well see .1-.2” WV for a couple inches of new snow after 4pm. Wind on Sunday will be SE 25 early, becoming SW 30-35 after 10am and holding through Monday morning.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Monday looks snowy on-and-off all day, with steadier snow in the evening. The snow level will be 2000′ early, dropping to less than 500′ during the day and down to the surface in some locations in the evening. At this point, it looks like we’ll see 3-4” of snow between 10am and the evening. Wind on Monday will be SW 20-30, turning to WSW 35 in the evening. I’m so overwhelmed from doing the Gorge and metro area forecast that I can’t think any further out than that right now!

Gorge Wind Forecast

East wind at 30-35 all day Friday. East wind at 40-50 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock all day Saturday. East wind at 50-60 Sunday morning, dropping to E 35-45 at Iwash Sunday afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the funny features of our minds is that unpleasant emotions or thoughts tend to bring us into a timeless state. Sensations driven by the amygdala (fear, panic, terror, worry, anxiety) are especially problematic. The unpleasantness often feels as if it will last forever.

When this sense of “it’s never going to end” arises, we can try several approaches. We can use our intellect (thus bringing our left brain online) to tell us that we’ve been here before and things changed for the better. We can use our bodies to calm our nervous system by taking deep belly breaths to stimulate the vagus nerve. We can combine the two by meditating on equanimity. Here’s how:

Pick a few phrases that help you accept the changing nature and flow of life. Mine are: “All things are impermanent”, “May I trust and delight in the unfolding of life,” and “May I stay rooted like the trees in the forest.” Close your eyes, take deep belly breaths, and repeat your phrases slowly, letting yourself feel what the world would be like if you really embodied these beliefs. When you lose track of what you are doing and return to the task, congratulate yourself for returning to awareness. Then continue.

It’s simple, but it brings me a reduction in anxiety and a little more peace when times get rough. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day. #inhonorofcarrie

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Today looks clear and cold with single-digit temps early and mid-20’s later. East wind. No rainbows. Saturday starts off with high clouds. Snow starts up around 9:18am in Hood River. We’ll see 3-4” by midnight. Temps will be in the teens early and low 20’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Sunday’s a crapshoot for snow vs. rain. I think we’ll see 3-4” of snow between midnight and sunrise, followed by half an inch of ice. Temps will be in the upper teens early and the low 30’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. We’ll see more snow or freezing rain Monday night, Tuesday, and a monster of a system Tuesday night.

Road and Mountain Biking

No, there is no biking, not unless you have a trainer bike or a gym membership. It has been pointed out to me that fat biking is available, so there’s that. There is snow kiting potential, backcountry skiing potential in the Gorge, and XC skiing available at the Twin Tunnels.

Upcoming Events

Coming up this morning, it’s the f***ing cold 10 Speed Coffee Run, where that free coffee and donut is going to feel oh-so-good after a single-digit 4 mile jog. All other events this weekend are questionable due to Snowpocalypse 2017 #2.

Have an awesome day today!
