Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s a light westerly breeze out on the river on this partly cloudy Friday morning, and that’s all the wind we’re going to see today. Transitory ridging builds inland midday ahead, flattening gradients. A weak weather system approaches late in the day, bumping up the gradients again sometime around sunset. We’ll see 10-13 this morning from Stevenson to The Dalles, fading (the gradient already dropped from .05 to .03) during the day and ending up with light westerly or just-plain-calm wind in the afternoon. The wind will pick up out of the west after dark.

Saturday will start out with Dawn Patrol near Hood River or just east of HR, which leaves you perfectly poised to help out with CGWA’s Hatchery work party tomorrow morning at 9am. It’s going to be windy all day, so it’s okay (don’t go all FOMO) to take an hour or two to give back to your beach. Bring loppers, rakes and gloves. Some sort of refreshments will be provided. So, I said there would be dawn patrol. We’re looking at 22-25, maybe a touch more, from Swell to Rufus, or possibly from Mosier to Rufus. Depends on the extent of the low clouds. The wind should pick up to 25-29+ from Hood River to Rufus, with 23-26 further east. Stevenson is probably going to stay stuck in the clouds with 12-15. Doug’s will probably be the windiest spot, with a chance of 30+. Looks like we’ll be between weather systems on Saturday, which should give us relatively steady and reliable wind.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

Sunday looks a bit more complex, as the GFS is hinting at some convection (thunderstuffs, or at least unstable air) out in the eastern Gorge, especially in the afternoon. Given that, the most reliable wind will likely be in the central and near-east Gorge. We’re looking at dawn patrol at 22-25 from Hood River to Doug’s. Despite the potential for instability, the GFS is calling for 27-31 by midday Sunday from Hood River to Arlington. I think that seems reasonable, but I’d also expect the wind to get gustier and more unreliable as the day goes on.

GFS runs over the last week were suggesting continued strong westerlies on Monday, but that’s no longer the case. Now they suggest afternoon high pressure, giving us 15-18 early in the day and light wind in the afternoon. River flow today, Friday, is a massive 470kcfs, and water temp is 56 degrees. If you are planning on getting on the water this weekend, expect very strong current (especially near Rufus). Ride with a buddy, and keep them in sight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The only snow on Mt. Hood right now is all the snow on the ground.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m feeling sad and discouraged and powerless this morning after seeing the president of the United States pull out of the Paris Climate Accord yesterday. While I’m not often one to condone mob mentality, I do find it striking that only three countries are not part of the accord (and Nicaragua isn’t part of it as a protest against the accord not going far enough!).

This raises an important point for all of us. When we as individuals take a lonely stance, it’s important to carefully consider our reasoning. A lonely stance, standing up against hatred on a MAX train, for example, can be a sign of courage and commitment to others. On the other hand, a lonely stance, shouting racial slurs, can be a sign of greed and selfishness and a fear-driven life.

When we find ourselves isolated in our beliefs, it’s important to check in with our emotions and examine our motivations. I believe that a sense of connection with others is a good indicator that our motivations are arising from wisdom and goodness. It’s a fact of life that we are interconnected – we all live on the same planet. The Paris Accord was an acknowledgment that we are in this together. Leaving it is a sign of our selfishness.

Knowing we must make sacrifices to protect the planet can lead to fear, and that can lead to self-protective maneuvers. We can let that fear drive us to self-protection, or we can embrace our fear and create deeper connections with others. This, of course, does not just apply to politics. It applies to our daily lives. Notice the fear. Turn towards it. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow. Have an awesome day.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

THEY, you know, THEM, they say that Falls Creek is open top to bottom and that Lewis River is clear as long as you drive there over Old Man Pass and not through Trout Lake. However, another THEM says that Falls Creek is NOT open and is snow-covered. See, you can’t trust THEM. The 88 and 23 roads above Trout Lake remain closed due to snow, as do Lake Branch, Vista Ridge, and McKenzie Pass.

Upcoming Events

Today starts off with the kickstand coffee run, where walking or jogging 4 miles will get you a free cup of black coffee and a rainbow sprinkle donut. This evening is First Friday in Hood River. The Black Dog Dualsport ride kicks off tonight at the Hood River County Fairgrounds with a free night ride for all comers.

The Black Dog continues tomorrow and Sunday, so be prepared for lots of dirt bikes out on the trails and roads near Odell. Tomorrow is also Oregon State Parks Day, meaning all the state parks are free. Many of them also have free fishing tomorrow, but you’ll have to check with each park to see if they are participating.

If you’re a windsurfer or kiter who uses the Hatchery, clear your schedule tomorrow morning. CGWA and Washington State Parks are teaming up to do a beach cleanup party. They need at least 20 of you to be there by 9am to do a bit of work. Bring loppers, rakes and gloves.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
