Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday’s wind didn’t cooperate with what I forecast. Why not? Well, let’s back-cast. Too warm in Portland and some weak low-level atmospheric instability combined with not enough pressure offshore. Today will be different, but with Portland sunny at dawn and forecast to equal the Gorge in temp today, you’ll want to get on it fast.

Looking at the overall picture, we have offshore high pressure at 1025mb and hotter weather forecast for the desert. Gradients start at .14 and .06. We also see a weak low moving towards BC and a weak front approaching the NW onshore. Get on it early. These factors will combine to knock down the western Gorge wind in the afternoon and make things gusty to the east.

Expect Dawn Patrol at 26-29 from Viento to Mosier with a bit less in Hood River. The eastern Gorge starts the day at 14-17. The wind holds at 26-29 from Viento to Mosier until late morning. Rowena and Doug’s may join in as well. It’s highly likely we’ll see the wind drop to gusty 18-23 from Viento to Swell around noon. Stevenson should build and hold at 24-27. Looking east of Mosier, we see afternoon westerlies at gusty 27-31. River flow is 298kcfs, a big jump over yesterday. That’s pushing it for the Maryhill stretch of river – experts only out there with that much flow. High temp Hood River: 78F.

The offshore front moves inland on Saturday morning. Clouds and drizzle are forecast for the western Gorge, perhaps as far east as The Dalles. The western Gorge sees light westerlies in the morning and 12-15 in the afternoon. Viento often overperforms in this setup, so don’t be surprised if it’s both rainy and 20-25. head east for better results. East of The Dalles, the wind starts at 12-15. Enjoy your morning. Then drive to the sunshine for 28-32 between Avery and Boardman. High temp Hood River: 66F. Arlington: 71F.

Sunday sees a low pressure system taking aim at Oregon from the northwest. Morning wind will be just 7-10 in the eastern Gorge with very light westerlies weest of The Dalles. A cold front approaching in the afternoon combines with high pressure off California for gusty 10-13 in the western Gorge and gusty 22-25 from Avery to Arlington. Have a fabulous, windy three days!
