Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday’s wind out at Arlington outperformed the forecast by an impressive amount. Let’s hope the same happens today and this weekend. As of this morning, we’re looking at teens near the Corridor today, calm wind on Saturday, and easterlies in the 20-25 range on Sunday. The next whiff of westerlies is predicted by the Euro for next Wednesday.

Friday starts out sunny in Hood River with pressures of 30.17/30.11/30.08 giving us gradients of .06/.03. Models are calling for just enough for big sails, big kites, and foil gear today. We start with 15-18 near Viento and Hood River with 10-13 east of Mosier and less than 10mph near Stevenson. Models like the idea of a drop to 12-15 midday with 15-18 again in the afternoon. Given that Portland is partly cloudy to start, and taking into account offshore high pressure, I’m going with 15-18 with a chance of 17-20 all day from Viento to Swell once the morning jitters sort themselves out. Stevenson will also rise to 15-18. East of Mosier, expect 10mph or less today. River flow readings are 60-93kcfs, river temp is 68F, and high temp forecast is 78F.

Saturday looks calm or nearly so all day. It may be calm enough for glassy wakeboarding and e-foilling and flat water pumping. High temp: 83F. Sunday’s forecast is currently for easterlies at 20-25 or a touch more between Rooster and Viento for much of the day. Late afternoon sees the wind drop to 15-20. East of Hood River, easterlies pick up to 5-10 in the afternoon. Between Swell and Doug’s, the wind remains light all day. High temp: 84F. Monday: easterlies. Tuesday: not much. Wednesday: lots of spread in the models, so let’s leave it here. Have fun today!

Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Saturday will be sunny and calm. Temps will be near 50 early and in the low 80’s later. Calm wind. No rainbows. Sunday brings more sunshine. Cycling

It’s still dusty and dry! All Hood River County trails are closed to motorized use until further notice. These trails are closed to all uses: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
