Friday. Wind, wind, wind and … rain???

The windy streak continues today, with way more wind this morning than I’d anticipated. It looks like the high pressure didn’t fill in quite as far inland as models predicted yesterday, leaving us with stronger gradients than models showed in advance. Anyway, blah blah blah. Gradients at 6am (no cat wakeup this morning) were .08…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gradients at 6am (no cat wakeup this morning) were .08 (pdx-dls), .05 (dls-psc) and .46 (eph-dls). The overall setup is good this morning, but an approaching front this afternoon will wreak havoc on wind speed and reliability, so get out early if you can. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Expect 17-21 right off the bat from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 at beaches further east. By midday, the wind should be in the 23-26 range from Viento all the way to Arlington, and that’s about when the trouble will start. Models show 25-29 this afternoon, and you can expect that for 90 minutes pretty much anywhere you look. But Stevenson will likely be the golden child today, with the strongest, steadiest wind for the longest amount of time. Other likely locations include Avery and Arlington, with gusty afternoon wind most other places. In other words, drive pre-emptively.

That front continues its eastward motion tomorrow morning, leaving us with gusty 8-11 pretty much everywhere to start the day. By afternoon, the western Gorge, likely under overcast sky, will see gusty 12-15. East of the cloud line you’ll find 23-26.

Sunday morning looks cloudy and perhaps even damp in the western Gorge. East of the low clouds we’ll have 13-16 in the morning and 23-26 in the afternoon. Monday looks like a return to a more stable setup with 15-18 early and 26-30 in the afternoon.

In other words, it will be windy every single day for the near future. Thank you, and enjoy your windy weekend.

Random Morning Thoughts

My cat thinks she’s an outdoor cat. The cat rescue place told me she’s an indoor cat. So she sits in the window all day watching the outside, and occasionally she runs away. When she returns, she’s much happier, more playful, more relaxed, sleeps with me, and doesn’t wake me up in the morning.

We humans are similar. It’s part of our nature to be playful and free. When that’s taken away from us by life, society, or our desire to conform and fit in, we’re not going to be as happy and relaxed as we could be.

No, we can’t be totally uninhibited and 100% free. But we can create fun and play within life as it is. We just have to be creative. Much like my cat, we can steal a few minutes of freedom within the confines of our structured lives. We can do that by actually playing, and we can do that by finding play inside us through meditation.

Speaking of playing, I set aside today for a long bike ride. I gotta go play now. You find some play too!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s sunny this morning, again. Thank goodness, because we have a cloudy weekend coming up. Expect sunshine for much of the day with increasing clouds this afternoon. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the low 80’s later. Moderate to strong wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks partly to mostly cloudy pretty much all day with, get this, a chance of sprinkles in the afternoon. Yes!!! Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the (brrr) low 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. 8% chance of rainbows. Expect a continued chance of sprinkles Sunday morning under mostly cloudy sky. Temps will be in the upepr 50’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. 11% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s quite a bit windier than I’d anticipated this morning, but I’m still going for a long ride in the valley. Tomorrow morning looks both less windy and less sunny, so it should also be a nice day for a ride. Just remember to avoid Odell and any road that leads to the Fairgrounds.

Upcoming Events

There are three wind-related events this week: The Gorge Paddling Festival in Stevenson, with the big Wildside Relay downwind race happening on Saturday. Stevenson also has longboard windsurf racing on Saturday, with rigs available to rent for $25, and those races move to Hood River on Sunday. Cascade Locks hosts the Gorge Dinghy Invitational sailboat races Friday through Sunday.

Today’s events include a by-donation yoga class at Flow in Hood River at 8, another by-donation yoga class at Samadhi in White Salmon at 6:30, and the race-pace Post n’ Pint mountain bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30. Do the ride, and you’ll get a free pint of beer. Also, the Tour will be on the TV in the evening at the shop.

Tomorrow morning at 7, it’s the best group run ever, the Kickstand Coffee Run. Jog 4.1 miles and you get a free cup of coffee and a donut. Also tomorrow morning at some horrendously early hour, there’s Iaido, so if you happen to have a Japanese sword, gi, and hakama lying around the house, you can join in on that.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
