Friday. Wind today, wakeboarding tomorrow, wind Sunday.

There’s not all that much wind on the river this morning, which is good, because the poor river gets tired generating whitecaps, unicorns and rainbows day after day. There’s not all that much gradient out there either, at least not at 7am: .06 (pdx-dls), .03 (dls-psc) and .56 (eph-dls), with the river temp reading 72…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

With very little marine layer this morning and the upper flow forecast to turn more northerly, models are predicting the wind to back to nothing midday. I’m going to contradict the models today and say that we’ll see 13-16 from Viento to Mosier this morning with 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles this afternoon. You’ll also find 13-16 from Rufus to Arlington this morning, but that far-east wind will likely die before you make the drive.

Tomorrow looks glassy everywhere expect Home Valley, Stevenson and Cock, I mean Rooster, Rock. You may find easterlies at 10-13 at those locations.

Sunday starts off with light and variable wind and picks up to 10-13 by noon. As a shortwave approaches the coast mid-afternoon, we’ll see the wind jump to 23-26 pretty much everywhere (that’s Stevenson to Arlington) with 26-30 possible if the timing works out right. Monday looks like 24-28.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: Jones today, 17-21. Jones tomorrow, 13-16. Jones Sunday, 23-26. Sauvie’s today, 15-18. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 12-15. Sauvie’s Sunday, 8-11.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: 10-15/15-20/30-40, NW 6 @ 9. Tomorrow: 15-20/20-25/LT S, NW 7 @ 10. Sunday: light and variable, NW 6 @ 10 (surf session!).

Random Morning Thoughts

I was writing the wind forecast this morning and thinking about the gradients. When I first moved here, I learned that .07 from Portland to The Dalles was enough to make it 5.0 on the water for windsurfers. That number was gospel. Also gospel was taking the measurement from Portland and The Dalles (probably due to convenience – there are airports in those locations, and airports have weather stations).

But there are mornings when the gradient is .11 and it’s positively nuking, and there are mornings with an equal gradient and very little wind. I’ve learned over the years that the gradients are just one small part of the picture, and that what’s happening hundreds of miles away in the upper atmosphere can have more impact than Portland or The Dalles.

Sometimes we learn things and incorporate them into our world view on a deep level. And we don’t think to look at those views and change them. This happens in our interactions with the outside world, and also with our interactions with our inside world. For example, we think cats can’t learn tricks. Well, mine sits on command!

And perhaps we learned as kids that we were bad at math, clumsy, socially awkward, or unattractive. In the intervening years, things may have changed without us noticing. Or the picture may be more complicated than we were capable of understanding when we formed those beliefs. Our beliefs, both about ourselves and the world, may be imprisoning us and keeping us from making intuitive leaps.

So, the next time you find yourself thinking, “That’s just the way it is,” see if you can think of another way for it to be. If nothing else, you’ll drive boredom out of your heart for the moments you’re trying this out. =)

Gorge Weather Forecast

There are just a few high clouds in the sky this morning and lots of filtered sun. Expect more and more blue above your head as the day goes on. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the mid 80’s this afternoon. Light wind. Tomorrow looks sunny and hot. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No wind, really. Sunday starts with light wind and temps in the upper 50’s and finishes up with strong wind and temps in the low 90’s. No rainbows for the three day period.

Road and Mountain Biking

If I were a road biker (and I am), I’d get my butt on my bike right now to take advantage of the cool weather and the light wind. Sadly, I have to work this morning, but you can ride bikes! Tomorrow morning will be extra-awesome too, with light wind and cool temps. And guess what? Sunday morning will be awesome for road biking too. Just finish up before midday or you’ll be stuck in the wind and the heat.

Upcoming Events

Today’s the first day of the three day window for the kiteboarding big air contest known as Huckfest. It’s hard to huck with no wind, so at this point, it’s looking like that event will happen at Rufus on Sunday afternoon, but stay tuned for updates.

There are windsurfing races scheduled at Hood River’s Event Site on Saturday and Sunday, but that’s looking a little iffy with the light wind forecast. Maybe Sunday afternoon? Big Winds canceled the downwind paddle event scheduled for Saturday, but the Wild Woman trail marathon is still on in Trout Lake.

Other events tomorrow include a trail run at 8 at Post Canyon and a bike ride leaving Mt. View Cycles at 9. Coming up Sunday, there are four free yoga classes, ping pong at Hood River’s Armory, and pickup touch rugby in Mosier.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
