Gorge Wind Forecast

Those of you hoping for a windy Labor Day weekend or Labour Day weekend will be getting as you wish. Westerlies in the “moderate” range hang on through Monday, assuming no drastic changes in the forecast; for once, we do have model agreement.

So, for Friday, we’ll have an offshore front moving southward. That’s a bit odd, and will likely have the effect of making the wind up-and-down. We start with 10-13 in most locations, except the cloudy far west, which starts at 5-10. The wind builds steadily, hitting up-and-down 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus by early afternoon. Given the setup, it seems likely the wind won’t last long in the western Gorge; a short-lived burst of mid 20’s will drop to 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier this afternoon.

Tomorrow starts with 16-19 from Viento to Mosier (probably minus Hood River) with 5-10 east and west of those locations. Models do disagree a bit (I guess I lied before), with one calling for 13-16 and the other for 22-25. I’ll take the latter. Let’s give Saturday 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles by early afternoon.

Weak ridging on Sunday gives way to an offshore low pressure trough late in the day. Sunday’s wind will be a bit of a timing issue. Earlier trough = stronger wind. The day starts with 16-19 from Viento to Mosier with light wind east of Mosier (happy fishing!). Models agree on a bit of a drop in the morning and a rise in the afternoon. Seems like we’ll have 20-23+ from Stevenson to Mosier from 2pm on through sunset. As of right now, Monday’s forecast is 20-23 right off the bat, holding all day, strongest west of The Dalles, potentially problematic for the Cross Channel Swim.

BONUS: Jones Friday: 5-8. Saturday: 10-13. Sunday: 19-22. Sauvie’s Friday: 11-14 late. Saturday: 15-18. Sunday: 17-20. Coast (north/central/south). Friday: 5-10/5-10/20-25, NW swell 4′ at 9 seconds. Saturday: 15-20/20-25/30+, W 4′ @ 9. Sunday: 20-25+/25-30/30+, W 5′ @ 11.
