Friday. Wind, instability, a busy weekend, and less heat, thank goodness!

If you would like a free trial of iWindsurf or iKitesurf, your opportunity is this weekend. Why wouldn’t you? It’s free! In other announcements, Kiteboarding for Cancer is this weekend at the Event Site and there’s a free Ezzy Sails demo at Doug’s today from 10 to 5. Now, on to the forecast, which is…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Now, on to the forecast, which is already way out of whack with the models, due to the instability in the atmosphere. We’re seeing very strong localized gradients of .15 (pdx-dls), .10 (dls-psc) and .38 (eph-dls) this morning with only low to mid 20’s on the river. I suspect this is due to a lack of capping – in other words, the wind is not confined to the river; it’s sneaking across the Cascades at all elevations. But what do I know? Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Anyway, the atmosphere is supposed to stabilize as the day goes on, and that should be enough help to give us gusty 25-29 pretty much everywhere with periods of 30-35 possible at the Rowena stretch and at the Rufus stretch. Stevenson will start off in the teens and will pick up into the mid to upper twenties by midday.

Tomorrow’s a little tricky too, with models predicting strong wind right off the bat, but also predicting a weak weather disturbance to move through and upset the delicate Gorge balance. Expect gusty westerlies at 16-19 right off the bat from Viento all the way eastward (some areas may have stronger wind early). By the afternoon, we’ll see gusty 26-30 pretty much everywhere, although Swell and Doug’s may suffer the wind-dampening consequences of that passing weather system.

Low pressure really settles in off the coast on Sunday, affecting gradients and therefore wind speed. We’ll see 10-13 early and 13-16 in the afternoon, strongest near Hood River early and from Stevenson to Doug’s in the afternoon.

Jones and Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 12-15. Jones tomorrow, 10-13. Jones Sunday, 13-16. Sauvie’s today, 5-8. Sauvie’s tomorrow, light. Sauvie’s Sunday, 5-10.

Coast forecast (north/central/south). Today: LTW/LTW/S 10-15, SW 3′ @ 17 seconds. Tomorrow: W 10-15/W 10-15/S 5-10, SW 2′ @ 16. Sunday: LTNW/LTNW/20-25, SW 3 @ 15.

Random Morning Thoughts

My cat’s being a pain in the butt lately. She’s taken to waking me up at 4am by first meowing, and then by jumping on me from high places. As a youtube video, it would be funny. For me, a human trying to get some rest, it’s not funny at all.

Animals, and people too, do things to get our attention when they need something. The trouble with animals is that (much like babies), they can’t tell us what they need. We have to intuit it by trying different approaches.

The great thing about being adults is that we can learn to express our needs. We don’t have to scream and jump on people. When we’re feeling angry or irritated or upset, some need isn’t getting met. Maybe we’re hungry. Maybe we need connection. Maybe we’re feeling a lack of trust. So we do things like yelling (the human version of my cat’s 4am meowing) or punching (my cat jumping on me from high places) or ignoring (my cat likes to hide under the bed). But if we can be more sensitive to what we’re lacking, we can learn to express it explicitly rather than causing chaos around us.

From the other side, when we see someone not getting needs met, the gentlest thing we can do is blend with that and offer them what they need, instead of returning the yelling, the punching or the ignoring. (although yelling can be helpful sometimes!)

As for my cat, well, I think she’s just hungry at 4am. So perhaps she’ll get a larger dinner and a smaller breakfast…

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy and smoky out there this morning. The former is due to the instability in the atmosphere (the t-storms, sadly, missed us last night) and the latter is due to an unidentified wildfire somewhere that is causing much speculation and little solid factual information. Expect temps in the mid 60’s (with mugginess) this morning and low 80’s (hooray) this afternoon with strong wind and no rainbow and lessening cloudiness.

Tomorrow looks partly cloudy as a weather system leaves us with partial high overcast. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and the upper 70’s (yes!) in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks partly cloudy with temps in the low 60’s early (hell yes!) and low 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

The only thing I have to say in biking news is that there are rides to go on. Trailgate, a celebration of the 44 Road Trails, is at Billy Bob snowpark on Saturday. There will be food, drinks, and live music along with education about Jimmy T’s future plans for that network, including an extension of Cook Meadows trail to High Prairie. The Oregon Endurance MTB race, a 45 or 80 mile epic, happens on the 44 Road trails on Saturday. This is a grassroots event, free of charge and self-supported.

The Tour de France is on the TV at Dirty Fingers every evening. Mt. View Cycles has a women’s bike ride Saturday morning at 9am (beginner-friendly). They have another group ride (probably mtb) on Sunday evening at 5:15.

Upcoming Events

Today is Friday, and it’s well past 7am, and that means we’ve all missed the 7am Kickstand Coffee run. Want free coffee and a donut? Run 4.1 miles. Kiteboarding for Cancer starts today at the Event Site, and the Kite Derby, well worth watching the start, begins at 10:30 tomorrow morning. The Oregon Open Ocean SUP race is at the coast this weekend (and it won’t be all that windy, so that’s good). The WIND youth regatta is in Cascade Locks (where it’ll be windy, so that’s good too). There’s a campfire(less?) song circle at Rooster Rock (not at the naked part of the beach) tonight from 7pm-9pm. There’s a free Ezzy demo at Doug’s today from 12 to 5.

Trailgate and the Oregon Endurance MTB Race are on the 44 Road Trails this weekend. There’s a Pearl Izumi shoe demo at Post Canyon (bottom of Post) tomorrow from 8-10, a trail run at 8am, and a free Foundation Training class with Dr. Eric Goodman at the Event Site at 9:30am tomorrow.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
