Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Friday is starting out overcast with light snowfall on Mt. Hood. That’s tame compared to what’s in the forecast for the next 48 hours or so: roller coaster snow levels, nuclear-force wind, and intense orographic precipitation. After that, tho, the weather turns mellow for several days.

For Friday, we’ll have light snow during the day and heavy mixed precip overnight, likely switching to rain. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ overnight. A trace of snow will fall during the day, with the snowfall rate increasing in the afternoon. Between 4pm Friday and 4am Saturday, about 0.9” water value (WV) falls on Mt. Hood. That’ll start as snow and then switch to freezing rain, mixed precip, and then plain old rain. So, best guess: 2-3” snow followed by 0.7” mixed precip and/or rain. Wind will be NW 10 early, WNW 30 in the afternoon, and WNW 40 overnight.

Saturday starts out mostly cloudy with orographic sprinkles. The snow level will drop during the day and bounce around in the evening. Honestly, it’s quite difficult to say what form the precip will take; 850mb temps will be somewhere between 0 degrees C and 2 degrees C. None of this may matter given the wind. Anyway, we’ll see 0.3” to 0.4” WV during the day, probably starting as rain and ending with 1-2” of wet snow. Overnight precip will be 1.4” WV, starting as wet snow or mixed precip and turning to dry snow. Let’s call it 8-10” of fresh snow and be super-stoked if it’s all snow and we end up with 18”.

On to the wind. Problematic is a good word. WNW 40 early, W 50 by noon, W 60 in the evening, and NW 35 after midnight. Those wind speeds will limit lifts in the morning. By the afternoon, all the resorts may lose all the lifts. In addition, the up-and-down freezing level will probably contribute to significant icing on the lifts. That could impact operations Sunday morning.

Sunday starts out mostly cloudy with flurries. Do check the resort websites for concerns about icing on lifts and deicing delays. The afternoon looks partly cloudy with a few orographic flurries. The snow level will be 1500′, possibly dropping as low as 0′ near Mt. Hood overnight. Precip: 0.2” WV during the day, for 2-3” of powder. Just a trace overnight, if any. Wind will be NW 35 early, NNW 25 in the afternoon, and N 20 overnight. After that, mountain weather looks dry through midday Thursday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Friday, we’ll have east wind at 5-10mph all day long. River flow is 77,400cfs and temps is 43 degrees. Saturday brings westerlies at gusty 20-25 in the far west and east of The Dalles. It’s likely we’ll see gusty afternoon westerlies in the central Gorge as well, probably in the 20-30 range. It’s equally possible the wind will wait to arrive until after dark, when we’ll have a short-lived burst of W 30-35 between Stevenson and Hood River. Definitely a bad night to leave your garbage cans outside. Sunday’s wind looks like 22-25 from Hood River to Rufus for the first half of the day with a fade to 10-13 in the afternoon.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Road and Mountain Biking

Stay off the trails – it’s too muddy. Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate dirt and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. Syncline is freeze-thaw, and therefore extremely delicate, above the fence. Please don’t ride it or you’ll do major trail damage. The Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.

Upcoming Events

At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s a by-donation yoga class at Yoga Samadhi at 4:15 on Friday afternoons.
