Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Friday morning, and there’s no sign at all of the west wind stopping any time soon. We’ll see another round of moderate westerlies this weekend followed by stronger westerlies late Sunday into… who knows when?!!?

Offshore high pressure Friday combines with a heat low in the desert and morning marine clouds in the western half of the state for all-day moderate westerlies. Strongest, steadiest, longest-lasting wind will be found in the Corridor today. By mid-morning, westerlies pick up to 19-22 from Stevenson to Mosier. Stevenson quickly follows, once the marine layer burns off. Afternoon westerlies spread out to the Rowena stretch of the river (also 19-22mph). There’s a good chance the HR-Mosier stretch will back off then, due to Portland heating. Your chance at Rufus comes late in the day, when the wind will pick up to 19-22 there. However, river flow today is 329kcfs, which is quite a lot of water for the Maryhill stretch. River temp is 57 degrees.

Offshore high pressure holds steady on Saturday, setting up another round of moderate westerlies. The day starts with 17-20 from Viento to Mosier. By midday, the wind builds to 23-26 from Stevenson to Avery. Rufus joins in late afternoon with 20-23. Not much will be happening farther east, as hot weather across the desert shuts down the far-east gradients.

Sunday looks interesting – the day starts the same as Friday and Saturday: shallow marine clouds in the desert, offshore high pressure, heat low in the desert. Westerlies open the day with 16-19 from Viento to Hood River and build to 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles by early afternoon. Things get interesting late in the day as a trough pushes down from Alaska bringing cooler air. If the timing is right, we could see a late-day bump into the upper 20’s first in the Corridor and then out east. The strong wind continues through Monday, which currently has a forecast of 28-32.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Friday: 10-15/20-25/30-35, SW swell 2′ at 15 seconds. Saturday: 20-25/25-30/35-40, W 3′ @ 10. Sunday: 15-20/20-25/30-35, W 3′ @ 10. Jones Friday: 23-26. Saturday: 25-28. Sunday: 27-30. Sauvie’s Friday: 12-15. Saturday: 12-15. Sunday: 10-13.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you’re looking for Brown Pow, you’ll find it all over the place. Post is good. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are “open with patches of snow”, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the top. Lower Lewis River is open.

If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
