Gorge Wind Forecast

Slower-than-expected marine air this morning hasn’t replaced the heat low in the Willy Valley. With temps equalized across the Cascades and low pressure across the region, westerlies will be slow to materialize. Once they do, they’ll be here for three days before a wickedly strong east wind episode arrives Monday afternoon.

For Friday, we’ll have light and variable wind all through the Gorge to start the day. As desert heating outpaces the west side of the state this afternoon, westerlies increase. While that sounds promising, it’s worth noting that today sees offshore low pressure. We’re robbed of the normal assistance from the east Pacific High. Westerlies will likely be less than model forecasts. Let’s call it gusty 21-25 this afternoon from Stevenson to Avery and get excited if we see more than that. It’s possible, just not certain. River flow is 74,700cfs and temp is 68 degrees. High temp today: 96.

Saturday starts off with marine clouds in the western Gorge. those burn off by midday. Westerlies start at 13-16 from Viento to Hood River with 23-26 from Mosier to Arlington. The sky clears by 11am, and westerlies rise to 25-28 from Stevenson to Arlington. High temp: 87.

A ridge of high pressure builds across the region on Sunday, but don’t you worry. Very strong offshore high pressure compensates for the lesser inland gradients. The day starts with 17-20 from Viento to Swell with 7-10 everywhere else. By late morning, the wind picks up to 22-25+ from Stevenson to Rufus.

Things get mighty interesting on Monday as a cold front / trough drops down from the NE. While the day may start with light westerlies, it’ll quickly transition to E 20-40 everywhere from the west end of the Gorge to the far eastern reaches. Easterlies become more localized to the western Gorge and elevated zones on Tuesday; expect 30-50 from Rooster to Stevenson with 40+ on the mountain ridges.

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.

Have an awesome day!
