Gorge Wind Forecast

Whether you like west wind or zero wind, there’s something for you in today’s forecast! For Friday, a weak front will drag cooler air into the west half of the state and leave the desert toasty. This willd rive gusty westerlies. The day starts with gusty 17-21 from Stevenson to Hood River with 10-13 farther east. As the front moves through, the upper atmosphere will stabilize, hopefully enough to steady out the afternoon wind. Let’s call it 23-26 this afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles with 11-14 east of there. River temp is 52 degrees. Flow this morning is 325kcfs, quite a bit for the Rufus stretch, but doable if your skills are solid.

Saturday’s forecast contains west wind at less than 5mph all day long. Why? Low pressure overhead will squash the gradients. If you’re desperate for wind, you’ll find 15-20 at the north and central coast and 12-15 late in the day at Sauvie’s.

Sunday looks interesting. A low pressure system moves into the desert, triggering SW flow and atmospheric instability. As the day goes on, the atmosphere in the western half of the state will stabilize. This makes for a tricky forecast, as rain and possible thunderstorms could easily disrupt the wind. For now, let’s call it calm wind in the morning. After 2pm, models suggest the wind will pick up to 26-30 from Stevenson to Rufus. The farther east you go in the afternoon, the more likely it is that the wind will be impacted by thunderstorms. Monday currently looks like 20-24 early and 10-13 in the afternoon. For those of you who like stronger wind, both the GFS and the ECMWF models are hinting at Wednesday afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

Let’s just skip this today, okay? Just ’cause. You go have yourself an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Road and Mountain Biking

I received a report yesterday that Lewis River is open from the bottom. Not sure about the very top. Knebal and Eightmile and Bottle Prairie are definitely not open per multiple reports, contradicting earlier information. Cows are out on Hospital Hill, so no dogs are allowed. There’s a work party on the 140 on Saturday – meet at 9am at the intersection of Post Canyon Road and Riorden Hill Road. There’s a ride to benefit the National Psoriasis Foundation on Sunday at 10am at Kickstand Coffee. The ride is free (by donation?), and there will be donuts awaiting participants at Rowena Crest.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with the Kickstand Coffee Run. Four miles of walking or jogging earns you a drip coffee and a donut. If you’d like more free donuts, the fundraiser ride for the National Psoriasis Foundation will have donuts too – that ride leaves Kickstand at 10am on Sunday.

Tonight is first Friday in Hood River, and if you stay up all night, you can see the Eta Aquarids meteor shower after midnight. Tomorrow’s events start with a trail run in Post Canyon at 8 and a work party on Post Canyon’s 140 trail at 9. There’s a free boot camp workout in Sorosis Park at 10. The Dog River Super D bike race is on Sunday off highway 35 – avoid that trail this weekend because folks will be practicing on Saturday too. One good alternative might be Lewis River – it’s open and ready to go.

Have an awesome day today!
