Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

West wind of various sorts continues for a few more days before an offshore low knocks down the windspeed. There’s actually a lot of variation in models after the weekend, so a precise forecast is impossible starting Monday. Let’s stick with what we know – the next three days!

For Friday, offshore high pressure combines with an approaching trough from the north today for moderate to strong, and gusty, afternoon westerlies. Early gradients were .08 and .02, suggesting that the Corridor is the place to be in the morning. As this system approaches later, you’ll find wind pretty much everywhere. Morning westerlies range from close to nothing near Stevenson, 15-18 from Viento to Mosier, and 7-10 east of there. After 11am, the wind starts to pick up. You’ll find gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Arlington. The Swell-Hood River stretch doesn’t do well with this kind of setup, so do be prepared to look elsewhere if the wind drops. River flow is 126kcfs and temp is 65 degrees.

Deep marine clouds on Saturday morning will likely stick around for much of the day near Hood River. That means you’ll have to shift yourself eastward for the stronger and steadier wind. Morning wind will be 10-13 under the clouds and 20-23 from Mosier to Roosevelt. Afternoon westerlies will probably hold at 12-15 under the clouds from Stevenson to Hood River, but will rise to 27-31 from Mosier to Roosevelt.

Low pressure moves over the region on Sunday and brings another round of deep marine clouds. Synoptic scale (big picture) gradients drop in response, and so does our local wind field. Expect 5-8 in the western Gorge early with 12-15 east of Mosier. Afternoon wind picks up to 12-15 in the west and 18-22 from Mosier to Arlington. After that, there’s quite a bit of disagreement in the models, so it’s not really possible to be exact about the forecast. Not-nuking westerlies are likely.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Friday: W5/NW5/20-25, SW swell 2′ at 16 seconds. Saturday: W5/NW5/15-20, SW 2′ @ 16. Sunday: W5/W5/25-30, SW 2′ ! 16 and NW 3′ @ 8. Jones Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: light westerly. Sauvie’s Friday: 10-13. Saturday and Sunday: nope and nada.

Road and Mountain Biking

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with the weekly coffee and donut run at 7am at Kickstand in Hood River. Jog 4 miles, and they’ll feed you a healthy breakfast of black coffee and a cake donut. This evening is First Friday in Hood River – the streets will be closed and the artists and social butterflies will all be out.

If you like sports gear, there are two wind and water sports swaps this weekend – there’s one on Saturday morning at Luhr Jensen Beach in Hood River, and there’s one Sunday morning at Windance. Northwave Sails will be providing free donuts and coffee at the Saturday swap, and they’ll also have a free intro to foil-boarding lesson at 10:30.
