Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, friends! We have a couple days of easterlies lined up for you. Westerlies return on Sunday, but it’s unlikely there will be much more than enough to ripple the river. Very gusty westerlies accompany a weather system on Monday. There’s a chance of something better on Tuesday afternoon as high pressure builds offshore, but models are far from agreeing on this. Fingers crossed for a Rufus session. There’s better agreement in the wind ensembles for Wednesday (naturally – I work all day), but that’s quite far out to trust the forecast.

Friday starts with pressures of 30.17/30.30/30.33 for easterly gradients of 0.13/0.03. Through late morning, we’ll have 30-35 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock, 25ish near Stevenson, and 20-25 near Viento. The wind falls to 20-25 from Iwash to Stevenson and 15-20 at Viento early afternoon before leveling out at 15-20 from Iwash to Stevenson and 15 at Viento later in the day. River flow yesterday was 71-107kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 79F. It’s like summer, but with easterlies!

Saturday starts off nearly identical to Friday: 20-25 at Iwash, 20-25 at Stevenson, 15-20 at Viento. Okay, slightly less wind than Friday, but still windy enough. It will die off faster. Early afternoon: 15-20 from Iwash to Stevenson with 10-15 at Viento. Evening: 15 from Iwash to Stevenson. High temp: 80 or so. Plenty warm for less wetsuit than this past week!

Sunday starts with light west gradients. Models aren’t very enthusiastic about the wind, and they’re also not totally in agreement. We don’t have the offshore high pressure we’d like to see, and we have warm temps all across the land. Call it 11-14 for now, and we’ll look at it again tomorrow and see if anything has changed.

A system moves through on Monday for very gusty westerlies at 18-22 or so east of The Dalles. Models hint at offshore high pressure building behind this system on Tuesday. If that timing holds, we should see solid westerlies somewhere. It’s worth noting that ensembles are more optimistic about Wednesday than Tuesday, so we’ll need to wait a day or two before making plans. Have a great weekend!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

The HRATS shuttle fundraiser is 10/7 in Post Canyon. It’s by donation, but they’d love if you donate $45 for a full day of shuttles. Sign-up starts at 8:30am bottom of Post (end of pavement). Shuttles start at 9am and end at 2pm.

Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

Post Canyon alert: this Saturday, 10/7, is the HRATS fundraiser shuttle day. Lots of perfect dirt out there right now – don’t ride in mud or you’ll do permanent damage. Speaking of mud, today’s forecast contains enough rain to turn Post (and maybe some other trails) into muddy messes. Hesitate before riding on Tuesday. Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
