Friday. Trail work parties and incoming rain!

We have easterlies this morning under clear skies with cold temps: 37 in Hood River and 49 at Rooster. That’s quite cold, and you’re better at warming your hands than I am if you’re out windsurfing or kiting today. You can expect easterlies at 15-18 this morning at Rooster, bumping up to 22-25 midday and…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

As a big upper level low sits off the coast tomorrow, gradients will remain easterly. You can expect 26-30 at Rooster Rock in the morning with 23-26 at Rooster in the afternoon. Stevenson will be in the 20-23 range or so.

Sunday sees that upper level low start to move onshore. We’ll still see easterlies with this setup, but they’re going to be gusty, up-and-down, and rather unreliable. Expect 23-26 at Rooster with less at Stevenson, and expect rain in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

Yesterday I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about “healthy” families. “Healthy” is not to be confused with “normal”, a word that describes something that doesn’t exist.

My definition of “healthy” says that kids in the family are well-adjusted. If there aren’t kids, healthy includes respectful, honest communication and a lack of contempt. My friend, I think, was beating himself up a little for the parental lifestyle in the family. But here’s the thing: he was beating himself up, not beating the kids up. And while beating yourself up a little bit, or questioning your lifestyle a little is healthy, beating up on kids or your partner (physically, emotionally, verbally, or through emotional neglect) is different.

This is an encouragement to just be you. If your way of being in the world doesn’t match the 1950’s ideal, that’s okay. It’s 2015, and who you are is okay, as long as you’re treating the people around you well. It’s okay to set aside that word “normal” and just be “healthy”, whatever that looks like to you. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s clear and sunny and very chilly this morning, which may explain why I knew to stay in bed. 37 degrees. Brrrrrr. Today will be sunny with a high in the mid 60’s. Light east wind. Tomorrow will likely start off clear but will see high clouds in the afternoon, more than likely. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. Sunday starts off cloudy and ends up rainy after 2pm. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. 11% chance of rainbows Sunday, 87% chance on Monday.

Road and Mountain Biking

I checked out Post Canyon for you yesterday. The vine maples are in full fall color. The dirt is a little dry but still good. And it’s quiet… not many people in there. Thumbs up, in other words. As for road biking, today looks nice, with just light east winds. If you’d prefer more clouds and a little more east wind, try tomorrow. If you want to ride in the rain, Sunday afternoon is your best bet for that. But hey, that means we might have tacky trails again by Monday or Tuesday!

Upcoming Events

Today is Friday, and as on all Fridays, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run at 7am. We’ve all missed it, and it’s all my fault for sleeping in until 7:30. So sorry. But the run will be there for you next week: 4.1 miles of jogging that earns you a free coffee and a donut. Today’s also the HRVHS gear swap dropoff: 6:30-8:30pm. Tomorrow is the actual swap: early bird buyers at 7:30-8:30, $25. After 8:30, $5/person or $10/family.

In a sign of poor planning, there are also two trail work parties tomorrow: One on Falls Creek to reroute the trail off the roads and double-track onto new singletrack (YAY!). That one meets at 8am at Bridge of the Gods. The HRATS have a trail work party in Post Canyon meeting at Family Man at 9am tomorrow. Tomorrow is the Oregon Meteorological Society’s winter weather conference 10am-2pm at OMSI. There’s a trail run at 8am tomorrow in Post Canyon. Coming up Sunday: three free yoga classes!

Have an awesome day today!
