Outfound Series Festival – Hood River
OutFound is a 3-day adventure sports and outdoor innovation festival taking place on June 9-11th on The Event Site. The activities include a speaker series, a startup competition for outdoor driven brands, an expo, hands-on workshops, creatives games and art, outdoor activities and sports on site, networking hours, outdoor films and music performances.
OutFound’s goal is to bring outdoor enthusiasts and innovators together for 3 days of experiential activities. It’s about learning new skills, meeting inspiring leaders and engaging in unforgettable outdoor focused experiences. Outdoor innovation is about out of the box thinking and this mixture of activities encourages that. We believe that getting adventure enthusiasts and leaders together in a creative setting will be a catalyst for exciting new ideas, projects and businesses in the outdoor space.
Gorge Wind Forecast
How about another complicated discussion of wind and weather dynamics? Yes? Okay, let’s go. For Friday, we’re starting off with light and variable or calm wind everywhere in the Gorge. A cold front will approach the coast this morning and move inland during the day, increasing the gradients a bit and bringing some rain to the Gorge. This, of course, is not ideal. We’ll see light wind through noon. The wind will pick up to 12-15 or so from Stevenson to The Dalles around noon, but once it starts raining in Stevenson (and rain it will!), the wind will drop off there. East of the rain, likely from Mosier to Arlington, the wind will pick up to gusty, up-and-down 22-26 after 2pm. The Swell-Hood River area is a maybe today. My best guess is we’ll be under the clouds with gusty mid-teen (at best) wind.
Saturday sees an upper level low sitting right off the coast. This will do a few things: make it clouds, quash the gradients, and send more rain our way. The wind will be light easterly (very, very light, I should say) through noon. As a weak wave moves through, we’ll see the wind pick up to up-and-down 10-14 from Stevenson to Arlington. Normally I’d say you’d find the best chance of steady wind out east, but the atmosphere will be somewhat unstable given the location of the low, and thunderstorms are a possibility throughout the region.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.
We’ll see a better chance for steadier and more reliable wind on Sunday as the upper low moves east and high pressure builds off the coast. Timing is going to be everything with this. As of right now, we’re looking at 10-13 to start the day everywhere from Swell to Arlington. The wind should pick up to 20-23 from Hood River to Rufus by noon and 24-28 from Hood River to Rufus after 2pm. Stevenson is probably going to stay in the clouds with 10-13 or 12-15, and Arlington will be in the low 20’s.
Now, let’s talk about Monday. We’ll have high pressure off the coast and low pressure out in the Rockies with a stable atmosphere overhead. This is pretty much an ideal setup, and the GFS model agrees. It’s currently predicting dawn patrol at 28-32 and averages of 30-40 in the afternoon. This is quite a few days out to be predicting such madness, but I’m certainly getting excited and making plans to change a 2:30 Portland meeting I have scheduled that day! Tuesday currently looks like 28-32.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
It rained 1/4” yesterday, which means the trails are probably just about perfect right now. Go ride! The snow level will be around 5000′ today and tomorrow, meaning you’ll want to choose your road and mountain bike rides carefully. Cold rain and snow are expected to fall at the higher elevations, and you don’t want hypothermia, do you?
