Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! There’s a couple possible opportunities for some sort of westerlies in the next four days or so, but nothing super-promising, super-reliable, or totally guaranteed. Friday starts with pressures of 30.17/30.15/30.14 for westerly gradients of 0.02 and 0.01. Not much. The wind turns easterly mid morning. You’ll find 15mph from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Stevenson. The wind builds to 20ish at Stevenson and 20-25 at Iwash this afternoon. River flow yesterday was 72-125kcfs, river temp is 58F, and high temp forecast is 60F.

Saturday starts calm. After a weather system swings through mid to late morning, you may find gusty 18-22 east of The Dalles. High temp: 61F. Sunday’s forecast is calm. I’m keeping an eye on Monday and Tuesday. Models suggest we could see a round of westerlies either or both days. Ensembles aren’t super optimistic, but they’re also not writing off an opportunity to get on the water. Fingers crossed. Stay tuned!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Lots of rain gives way to a bit of wet snow, to start next week. That’s followed by a dry stretch that lasts at least a few days and maybe a bit longer. Beyond that, models are all over the place; we’ll have to wait for more clarity. Friday starts off with sun on the slopes. Clouds arrive in the afternoon, and rain increases overnight. The freezing level will be 6500′ this morning with a snow level of 11,000′ that afternoon and 10,000′ after midnight. About 1” of rain is forecast overnight starting around 5pm. Wind: LTW this morning, SW 15 this afternoon, SW 25-40 in the evening, and SW 30-50 overnight.

Saturday will be rainy in the morning and showery in the afternoon and evening. The snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 7000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ overnight. The precip will be done before the snow level drops to lower resort elevations. Wind: SW 30-35 in the morning, WSW 30-35 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight. Clouds on Sunday give way to a mix of rain and wet snow overnight. The snow level will be 5500′ during the day and 6000′ overnight. About 0.4” to 0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight for a wet trace at best at 5000′ and 3-5” above 6000′. Wind: W 20 early turning to SW 10 mid-morning and building to SW 30-35 overnight.

It looks like the snow level will drop to 5000′ on Monday and 4500′ Monday night. It’s unclear how much snow will fall. For now, let’s say somewhere between 4” and 10” with strong west wind. I’ll narrow down the forecast as we get closer. Beyond Tuesday, the weather looks dry for at least a few days. After Thursday, there’s too much variation in the model/ensemble forecasts to make any sort of prediction. Fingers crossed for Monday and Monday night. Enough for another round of skating would make me happy! Have a great day!

FREEZE-THAW WARNING: temps dropped into the upper 20’s or less on Saturday morning. Trails that are exposed to open air (not under a tree canopy) are likely to experience freeze-thaw conditions. If you ride on thawed trails, you will do significant and permanent damage. DON’T. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
