Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Sunday is currently unpredictable. Models show a cloudy day on the mountain, but they also show massive rainfall lurking just to the north. If the storm track shifts, Sunday will be very wet and warm on Mt. Hood. If it stays where’s it’s currently predicted to be, we’ll see clouds. Wind speeds will also be impacted by the storm track – models currently suggest SW 10 early and SW 25 in the afternoon.

Models currently predict Mt. Hood to be in the bullseye of the storm track on Monday. The snow level will be 10,000′ or so while the rain is falling. If the models are correct, Mt. Hood will receive 2 to 4 inches of rain between 4am Monday and 7pm Monday. Whitewater kayakers (I had a dream about whitewater boating last night) will be quite happy about this. Skiers, snowboarders and polar bears, not so much.

Winter Companion Rescue Series – Hood River

Winter Companion Rescue Series is targeted to those who travel in avalanche terrain. These sports take us far from help and into terrain that is high reward and high risk. You will learn basic use of your beacon, probe, and shovel. The rescue portion will follow American Avalanche Association guidelines for companion rescue. When an avalanche buries your backcountry partner, acting fast and knowing what to do will save a life. You will be taught American Heart First Aid and CPR/AED skills for remote wilderness settings. November 8 & 9 at 2nd Wind. $94. https://heiko-stopsack-gfb7.squarespace.com/winter-companion-rescue-series

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s yet another windy morning at Rooster Rock. Expect 30-35 there and 20-25 at Steven’s Locks through midday. After that, we’ll see a quick drop to light-and-variable conditions in the afternoon. Saturday starts off light and variable. An upper level low moves into BC mid-morning as a cold front swings over the Cascades. This sets us up for west 26-30 from The Dalles east to Threemile between the hours of 9am and 3pm. The western Gorge will likely be gusty and showery, but we should see up-and-down 20-23 from Steven’s Locks to Doug’s Beach on Saturday. Sunday looks light and variable for much of the day with a short period of E 10-15 midday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve sat here for quite a while this morning trying to come up with something to say. I don’t have much… I was in Portland last night. When I left school, the worried professors warned me to stay away from the protests because there were “people in white hoods with bats”.

I don’t know if this is true. I do know that I ran into young, scared people leaving the area of the protests. They told me about riot police. They asked me for a hug. The smell of smoke hung in the air. Loud popping sounds came from the east, and helicopters hovered overhead. I-84 westbound was closed between exit 1 and 3 or so, and the traffic leaving town was eerily non-existent.

As I was getting in my car, I started talking to a tall, strong African American man who was walking by. He told me that friends had warned him to stay away from the protests because there were people attacking minorities. He was headed somewhere, but he was scared, watchful. Being Black and being scared is nothing new, but in Portland last night, it was dangerous to be a person of color.

I encourage you to ask yourself if this is what you want for your country. Do you want the status quo, where a darker skin color leads to an elevated sense of fear, a lack of safety, limited opportunities? Or do you want something different? The choice is yours. You get to speak up when these questions arise. You get to speak up when you witness racism or hate speech. You hold the power. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s simply icky out there this morning: gloomy, grey, dirty air, flat light… It’s definitely a manifestation of the Nothing. Expect Nothing early and partly cloudy sky later. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Maybe we’ll see some sprinkles overnight. East wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks showery, especially in the morning, with plenty of sunbreaks or even sunshine. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Strong west wind. 99.652% chance of rainbows. Sunday’s a crapshoot – it currently looks dry, but if the storm track shifts by 50-100 miles, a tiny amount in the grand scheme of things, we’ll be soaking wet all day. Keep an eye on the end of next week – models are hinting at a possible incursion of cold air from the east.
