Gorge Wind Forecast

I got home late from school last night, so I woke up late this morning. That’s not quite right, actually – my cat tried to wake me up at dawn by meowing in my face, but I pushed her away and went back to sleep. Anyway… that’s why this forecast is late, and I’m regretting not listening to my cat, who just wanted to get me up for dawn patrol. With an early gradient of .19 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc), the wind started off in the low 30’s near Swell with mid 20’s in the west and teens to low twenties to the east.

We do have a weak, dry, and rather invisible front moving overhead. Despite upper-level instability and very low-level instability, a mid-level stable layer seems to be keeping the wind right where it belongs: on the river. So, expect 28-32 from Viento to Mosier to start the day, fading mid-afternoon as Portland clears, but remaining in at least the low 20’s through the evening. As soon as the clouds are gone from Cascade Locks, they’ll have 28-32 too. The Rowena and Rufus sections of river will join in at 28-32 by late morning, lasting until late in the day. Arlington, according to the models, is too far east to get the full impact of today’s setup, so expect a max of 21-24 out there this afternoon. River flow is 170kcfs and river temp is 66 degrees.

Saturday sees weak high pressure inland and an upper level low approaching offshore. This will knock the gradients down a bit. We’ll start the day with 16-19 from Cascade Locks to Hood River. As the day goes on, the wind will fill in a little further east: expect 22-25 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles in the afternoon. The eastern Gorge will see less gradient, and therefore less wind on Saturday – no more than 10-13 out there. Stay close to home base, assuming home base is Hood River.

Looking at Sunday, that low pressure system moves closer to BC, sending cooler air into the western half of the state. High pressure to the south of that system, offshore from Oregon and California, will assist in the synoptic-scale (big-scale) gradients. If the sounding forecast is right, a weak frontal system on Sunday afternoon will destabilize the atmosphere enough to cause some inconsistency in the wind. For now, let’s call it dawn patrol at 24-27 from Swell to The Dalles with gusty 25-29 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Rufus (funny – that’s been the forecast for Sunday for at least the last three days!).

That front moves through on Sunday night and early Monday morning for a nice marine push and a more stable atmosphere. I’m thinking a nice, steady 27-31 all day, strongest near HR in the morning and from Cascade Locks to Rufus in the afternoon. More wind continues next week. HAPPY! BEST SUMMER! THE GORGE IS GREAT AGAIN!

Random Morning Thoughts

Given the fact that it’s absolutely nuking on the river right now, I think I’ll go windsurfing instead of reflecting. Have an awesome and safe day on the water!

Road and Mountain Biking

Nothing new to report, but it’ll sure be awfully windy for road biking today!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the weekly donut and coffee run at Kickstand Coffee in Hood River. If you can motivate to jog or walk 4 miles at 7am, they’ll give you a cup of coffee and a donut for free. This evening is First Friday in Hood River. If you’re near Cascade Locks today, stop by the Marina for day one of the Laser Masters Sailboat Champtionships, which should get pretty interesting with the strong wind this afternoon. Racing continues through Sunday.

There’s a free kite, board and foil demo brought to you by Windance on Saturday and Sunday at the spit in Hood River – I believe there’s BBQ at the demo. Big Winds has an ebike demo tomorrow, and they’re offering beer to entice you.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
